A decent discussion relating to non-price competition

The below is a review of the MP3 audiobook version of this work

This book is an examination of matchmaking in markets where conventional price making does not apply. For example in the market for kidneys, on-line dating services, selection processes used in placing high school students in NY and Boston and universities in general and similar such markets. The book is interesting in many ways. One is the description that Dr. Roth provides on these markets that are so ignored in economics departments. He provides a decent discussion and analysis as to how they work. In addition he provides a discussion as to what variables affect them (i.e., depth of market, speed required for decision making, etc.) and how. Based on this readers can see what constitutes good and badly functioning markets in these areas. An excellent discussion of these, all the more important, as stated previously, that their existence is barely even mentioned in economics classes.

In addition, there is also some discussion relating to institutions and how they are important to well-functioning markets in these areas. This part of the book, however, is relatively weak. It is too short and hence lacks the really in-depth discussion that is really needed. This is also ironic in that the institutional structure of these markets is very important to their functioning.

Regarding the audiobook, its reader sounds very much like Dr. Roth. This includes his inflexions, tone, etc. It reminded me of him as I had him as a student. The reader probably attended a lecture or two of his.

In conclusion, a very good book for those interested in the functioning of non-price markets.

A treat for those intrigued by behavioral economics

When I studied economics, I thought it was incredible irrelevant in many ways. It just didn't match what I experienced and observed in the real world. Thankfully, since then, the field of behavioral economics has grown dramatically to help explain the reality of markets. That's why I found Dr. Roth's book very fascinating.

For some of the markets explored in the book, I felt I almost needed a scorecard to keep track of the "who gets what and why." Far from being a flaw in the writing, it truly illustrated just how complex some markets are... and how increasingly complex some of them are becoming. Pity the poor folks for whom these market situations are an everyday reality. (I especially had sympathy for the parents who had to make school choices for their children. Looked more akin to gambling!)

I think this book has some great insight for the some of the new "sharing" markets where money may not be a deciding factor.

It may not be quick read due to the extreme amount of explanation that was sometimes necessary to describe the various markets. But definitely a treat for those who like to dig into behavioral economic issues.

A surprisingly engaging book about markets for things that don't sell for money

About 80% of this book is about the deferred acceptance algorithm, which is used in medical resident matching and public school choice matching among other things, though Roth avoids mentioning the algorithm by name or describing it until page 141. This leads to an odd narrative structure in which he writes about the problems in Boston public schools, then New York public schools, then gastroenterologist residencies, and assures us the problems all get solved, but he doesn't describe the solution and instead moves onto the next case study. It all comes together in chapter 8, but it seems Roth went to some lengths to push the solution as late in the text as possible. I think I understand why; this is a book of popular economics, and as such he wants to avoid alienating his potential market with equations or algorithms. It's structurally odd, though.

The book is worth reading for its vivid descriptions of the human damage wrought by disfunctional markets. Roth's discussion of federal judge clerkships was funny and perhaps a little sad, as we see how these paragons of "justice" can't be made to follow simple rules when it's in their rational self-interest to cheat.

Some passages seemed a little self-congratulatory, as the author describes his own work. I caught a couple of basic errors of fact, as in the bizarre assertion that Apple did not allow third party software development for the Macintosh computer. The last couple of chapters seem very rushed and only peripherally related to the book's main themes -- a couple of sentences on gay marriage, a couple of sentences on marijuana legalization, etc. Perhaps it would have been better for Roth just to have left this out.

The book is a bit more technical and data structure oriented than we would need to teach a class to supply chain masters students. It is an interesting read and a good value for the price but not the perfect fit for our students, maybe more techie students.

These stories are out of order.

Content-wise, these stories are standard later Braun.

It is disconcerting, however, that "The Cat Who Moved a Mountain" isn't followed by "The Cat Who Wasn't There," "The Cat Who Went into the Closet," and "The Cat Who Came to Breakfast," which is the correct chronological order and also the order in which they were originally published.

The last two stories in this compilation, "The Cat Who Blew the Whistle," and "The Cat Who Said Cheese" should follow the stories above.

Because of this, plot elements suddenly appear in "Whistle" and "Cheese" that are only explained in the following compilation.

This rearrangement of the stories is peculiar and confusing. I surmise that Putnam somehow screwed up. I hope if the books are republished that they will be grouped in the correct order: (Mountain, Wasn't There, Closet) and (Breakfast, Whistle, Cheese)

These books are entertaining and delightful.

Lilian Jackson Braun's books are always entertaining and delightful. She includes a lot of detail about the countryside and the people. There are no gory details about any of the crimes, no explicit sex scenes, just plain simple entertainment.

The first two in this book I had never read, but the third, I remembered some things, but I didn't remember who did it. The condition was exactly as stated which did not take away from the enjoyment

Over their heads

We have used this series in our program for the past 5 years. The revised edition is much to difficult for our level 1 students. The exercises that require them to discover the grammar is much too difficult for students who don't have a lot of vocabulary and I think that this has increased their affective filter. It doesn't make them feel successful it causes frustration and confusion. I would not recommend this revised edition for anyone looking for a grammar text for low level students. I hope that when the level 2 book is revised that it is not created in the same fashion.

Siri Hustved escribe una novela inteligente, sensible y en algunos momentos divertida. La novela está narrada en primera persona con trazos feministas y desprovista de un final que enlace los diferentes escenarios que presenta a lo largo de las 218 páginas.

En esta novela intimista y contemporánea, Hustvedt describe diferentes etapas de la vida de las mujeres creando varios escenarios que trasmiten los sentimientos y experiencias de cada una de las involucradas.

Una de las características más notorias es que, a pesar de darse una evolución en el personaje principal, no existe ninguna trama y da la sensación de que no se llega a ningún punto en concreto. Incluso este punto es comentado por la autora dirigiéndose de forma directa al lector. Existe una alta complejidad en crear una novela narrando historias de manera fragmentada que no tienen relación entre sí.

Siri deja ver entre comentarios y reflexiones profundas, su gusto por la poesía, la psicología y las filosofía.

Un verano alejada de Nueva York, su gente y sus recuerdo es lo mejor que le puede pasar a la mujer herida y abandonada que se refugia en Bonden, su pueblo natal en la tranquila Minnesota rural. Ahí reparte su tiempo impartiendo clases de poesía a virginales adolescentes, las sesiones de lectura con octogenarias de la residencia de ancianos donde vive su madre y la amistad con sus vecinos. Entre actividad y actividad la mente de Mia se llena de incógnitas e interrogantes, analiza su actividad literaria en un mundo de autores masculinos, el rol de la mujer en la sociedad a través de los siglos, la forma de pensar y de expresar los sentimientos de ambos sexos, entre poemas, crisis personales de las ancianas, de sus alumnas y correos electrónicos anónimos. El verano esta llegando a su fin y la estabilidad emocional de ella está mas equilibrada, esta lista para dar el siguiente paso.
Una novela muy bien escrita en la que la autora explora la psiquis femenina desde las distintas facetas de la vida, desde la de adolescentes inseguras sin experiencias en la vida a la de la ancianidad resignada pero llenas de sabiduría sin olvidar las facetas de trabajadoras, esposas y madres llenas de deberes y obligaciones. Una trama donde los sentimientos humanos condicionados por el sexo, los lazos afectivos y el entorno desencadenan pasiones, frustraciones, aceptación, emociones y sobre todo los desatados por el amor, el dolor y la sensación de perdida.

Good...but a few minor let-downs...

I really liked the first book and had seriously started really liking this series based off of how this book started out. The characters are interesting; the humans are survivors, struggling to find their new place in life and the alien species has definitely been thought through well. I really liked the action, the main character thoughts and feelings.

I madly loved the tension between Jet and Laks (her alien). However, the author went from teasing us with some moderately explicit detail to suddenly eliminating the romance detail altogether. Big disappointment for me. In my mind, a book needs to have a lot of depth in order to completely cut out a first time romantic interlude...but a book that has been building up to a specific relationship should not completely skip a sex scene entirely. It was literally "Jet & Laks are at dinner" and then the next page "Jet wakes up, thinking of what they did together the night before". I literally had to go back and forth through the pages in confusion thinking I missed something, but to my dismay I realized that the entire romantic exchange had been cut out even though the whole story seemed to be building up to that point.

I can only hope that the author does something to rectify this in the next book...but I am not in a rush to find out. I was most interested in the romance between Jet and Laks and the way that was handled definitely was a no go for me.

....What the heck!!!! Who does that? :)

The whole book is so good and the relationship between Jet and Laks was so good ( I was so excited I found this book with a good story and a good romance) and then...she skips the scene that we were all waiting for!!!! When they are going to be together.She just wakes up the day after and mentions this scene which happened the night before by blushing and TELLING US THAT is not relevant with what she is going through!!!
I mean c'mon!!! Who does that. The whole story is great but I felt cheated, specially if I was waiting for that. Their relationship was developing slow and nice. ;) so it's de that part important. The book has a good story of aliens and rebels. Most important she is strong and self sufficient. I'm sorry to say this but I love romance and it really made me think If the author will tell us again "screw you ,suckers!!!" I'm going to investigate :)

Losing Sleep Over This Book

The second book in the series I found better than the first in that Jet who is a slave owned by the Royals (current rulers) starts training for the Rings which is a televised event where Jet has an objective to attain a goal set up by the operators who design the simulations. Jet can still get hurt and feel pain , but to be killed for real doesn't usually happen. (The viewers don't know that. ) Richter wants Jet to succeed in passing the simulations to further his own plans The reader is left wondering who can Jet trust, who is being honest and what is the true objective?
There is also a love triangle as Jet has to show she is domesticated enough not to be a threat to the Nirreth by getting stung regularly by another Nirreth. Jet chooses Laksri for that job, but Anaze another human friend of Jet's who was captured at the same time as Jet, gets jealous as Jet and Laksri's relationship develops. The Nirreth have a barb in their tail which injects venom under the skin. This can cause an attachment to form between parties and is a prelude to sex if stung enough times. It also allows communication between the two parties mentally. The author completely avoids any descriptions of sex beyond kissing and caressing non-sexual areas of the body. At times you're left wondering what just happened when the author skips the sex scenes completely. I've read other books that are very explicit in describing sex scenes to the point it gets boring and takes away from the plot so at least this author concentrates on the plot minus any explicit sex scenes, but when she does skip any reference to a sex scene, it leaves a gap for the reader. It would have been better to allude to the sex scenes instead of completely deleting any mention of sex to this extent. Otherwise this is a book I found hard to stop reading and got me looking forward to the third book.

About the Author
Cynthia Lightfoot is Professor and Head of Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University, Brandywine. Her published works focus on the sociocultural contexts of child and adolescent development, most recently, on teen pregnancy, identity development, and youth culture. Lightfoot has served on the editorial boards of Culture and Psychology and Cognitive Development, and as Vice President of the Jean Piaget Society. Her interest in children and adolescents was fueled by experiences working with emotionally disturbed and autistic children in schools and as a child development specialist in a program for teenage mothers.

Michael Cole is an all-University of California Professor of Psychology, Communication, and Human Development. His home base is University of California, San Diego, where he is the Director of the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition. For many years he spent his afternoons participating with children and undergraduates in development-enhancing after-school programs. He is an editor of the journal Mind, Culture and Activity. He has published widely on the role of culture and schooling in development for which he has been awarded honorary degrees at Copenhagen University and the University of Helsinki. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academies of Education (of the United States and Russia).

Sheila Cole is a former journalist who specialized in writing about families, children, development, and education. She is also a children's writer. Her most recent book offers a history of American childhood and is written for young people. She has also authored picture books, historical fiction, and novels for young adults. She participates in literacy programs for homeless adolescents.

So much better than 'parenting' books

I bought this book to help me understand my baby. I'm not studying child development. I was a bit wary at forking out about 10 times as much as the average parenting book costs for a textbook, but am so glad I did.

Parenting books tell you what you should and shouldn't do and I find them too prescriptive. What I want to do is make decisions that are best for my family and baby, but to do this in an informed way - and this book is great for that. I was worried it might be too dry or heavy, but I actually found it far more readable than the average parenting book, it is beautifully written and filled with fascinating colour photos. It was wonderful, for example, to notice a picture of a baby blowing bubbles, because my baby had just started blowing bubbles like crazy - and then read and understand what that was all about. Also, unlike most parenting books which are padded out by cartoons or anecdotes that basically repeat the author's points, none of the information in this book is repetitive or extraneous. It has increased my confidence as a mother and helped me sort through all the conflicting advice new mothers receive.

I have shared this book round my mother's group. One of the other mothers, who has a science background, said she wasn't impressed at some of the studies referred to because there were far too many variables. Nevertheless, she too found it extremely useful and is ordering her own copy of the book.

Thiw is an excellent review of child development research going beyond the original bokk by Cole and Cole. It should be in the curriculum of undergraduate students of psychology and related fields e.g. special education.

It was a great text book for psychology major students, especially for learning developmental psychology.
It was a used book, but it was very clean, and just like a new book, which I appreciated very much.
The Development of Children is a helpful book and very worth reading sometimes no matter whether you are in psychology major, because it is related to children's development, which is practical and useful in life. :)

He has held academic positions at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, and ETH Zurich (Switzerland), and has made significant research contributions in the areas of robust statistics, computational statistics, and strategies in data analysis. A Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Huber is the coauthor of Robust Statistics, Second Edition, also published by Wiley.

I really wanted to like this, but this is just a bunch of disparate material thrown together, much of it incredibly dated (yet without historical value) – e.g. an entire chapter on when data is or is not "big" – and with very little advice for practicing statisticians.
