Better than the book it spawned.

Poppy Z. Brite, The Seed of Lost Souls (Subterranean, 1999)

First off, there is more to this slight (forty-six pages) chapbook than simply the seed of Lost Souls; it also contains a book review she did of an anthology put out a few years back and an interview with a fanzine. So it wouldn't be fair just to review it on the basis of the short novella. But I'll probably lean too far in that direction, anyway. Be warned.

I've never been much of a Steve-and-Ghost fan; I became a Poppy Z. fan after reading Exquisite Corpse, and took an immediate liking to the new novels that some wags have been calling "food porn." I've never been sure what it was about Lost Souls (and the S&G story in Wormwood) that didn't grab me. I have to say, after reading this, that I still have no idea-- but I do know I was far fonder of this than either of the other pieces.

Brite says in the introduction that "the writing is that of a twenty-year-old, sometimes breathless with possibility but more often just breathless." And to be fair, it's certainly an unfinished piece; the characters never really gel, but are very good sketches; the two storylines come together in what can generously be called the most superficial of ways; there is a good deal of promising imagery, but too little of it is fleshed out for the deeper-looking reader to get involved in anything resembling textual analysis. But the prose itself just says "wow." Even in such a disjointed, embryonic piece, it's obvious to the reader-- this reader, anyway-- that the person who wrote these lines was going to grow up and be a very, very good writer. Of course, that's rather easy to say in hindsight, but when work oozes potential like this and you're given a chance to read it, you have to feel like you were one of the people on the novel-in-progress-prize board a few years ago who encountered Elizabeth Kostova's half-finished manuscript for The Historian.

A number of the reviews on Amazon for this chapbook (which are, interestingly, all of either the five- or one-star variety) seem to have missed the point of the latter two sections entirely. "This book makes it seem like she despises the 'gothic' fan base..." (Feb. 6, 2004) can only be referring to the interview at the end, which seemed to me to express quite the opposite sentiment, though Brite's parting shot is obviously drawn from rather painful personal experience, and someone who doesn't read that into it (maybe you have to have been one of the outcasts yourself to get it) could see it as condescending. More amusing is a comment from from May of 1999 that seems like it's going to get interesting, then tails off "it's not like Lost Souls was a masterpiece or anything." I'm guessing this guy (I'm inferring from the lack of grammar and the tone the review was written by a male; sue me for sexism, then) skipped the intro altogether. Whether or not a book is a "masterpiece" doesn't really have any bearing on the fanaticism of its readership; Brite says in the intro that Lost Souls "has spawned music, artwork, roleplaying games, devotion, contempt, and a church-sponsored book burning...." Anyone who has taken the book and done anything with it, it can be safely assumed, is going to love this.

Peek behind the scenes at a classic!

"The Seed of Lost Souls" is a wonderful look inside the process of a writer's mind and the progress of a book from embryonic short story to modern classic. It contains the original story "Lost Souls" grew from, as well as a forward by Brite explaining how she expanded it into a book, an interview from the time of "Lost Souls" publication, and a book review containing her mixed feelings on vampire fiction. In response to the previous person's review, I found nothing condescending in it, but I guess some people just don't want to accept that the creator of Nothing, Ghost, and Zillah (unlike some of her readers) has grown up. Personally, I felt privleged at this chance to look behind the scenes of a favorite novel.

This is definitely a book for big Poppy fans. It's limited and signed and tells the story of her first book, Lost Souls. She gives some insight for writers and some of her opinions on such things as vampire stories. I recommend this book to ALL of you major Poppy fans.

Examine where you stand, even if you disagree

As you review all the "reviews" thus far written, you get a sense that Dr. Tatum's book has gotten people thinking and taking stands. I appreciate the straightforwardness with which Tatum introduces her subject -- racism. Sure, we can disagree with her definitions and use of rhetorics. But she made the definition clear and prominent enough so that we can disagree. It is hard to measure oneself by a wishy-washy yard-stick. Tatum provided a solid yard stick by which you may examine your own stance, assumptions, and conclusions. In reading the reviews, especially the critical ones, it struck me that even those who strongly diagreed with Tatum understood her basic premises and her arguments. It is upon that understanding that we can disagree. I applaud the author for clearly laying out her arguments on a controversial issue.

The main strength of the book, to me, is in fact the redefinition of racism. You don't have to agree with it, but you do now need to examine whether a "system of advantage" exists and if it does, whether it should be included in the definition of racism. I am neither white nor black, so I cannot speak of black/white issues in first-person. But I come from a family with four generations of academics. The system of school, academia, and education benefits me greatly, and I suit the system particularly through my upbringing. By analogy, I am open to the idea that past explicit systems of racial inequality do not lose its effect in a mere generation or two, especially for the black race. (Sorry to be imprudent, but Comedian Louis C.K. had this great line about, "White people want to add 100 years to every year it has been since slavery.") For Henry Fielding, 'great men', like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, and 'great rogues', like Jonathan Wild, are synonymous terms. Greatness consists in bringing all manners of mischief on mankind.

Alexander the Great overran a whole empire with fire and sword, pillaging, sacking, burning, enslaving and destroying millions of his fellow creatures. Julius Caesar abolished the republican liberties of his country in order to take the power into his own hands.

At the opposite side of the spectrum, Jonathan Wild was a great prig (pick-pocket), cheating the very tools who were his instruments to cheat others: 'I had rather stand at the summit of a dunghill, than at the bottom of a hill in paradise.'

For Henry Fielding, greatness rimes with ambition, lust, avarice, rapaciousness, hypocrisy, power, pride, insolence, insatiability, 'a privilege to kill, a strong temptation to do bravely ill'. Greatness is 'playing with the passions of men, to work one's own purposes out of the jealousies and apprehensions to create those great arts which the vulgar call treachery, dissembling, promising, lying, falshood, summed up in the collective name of POLLITRICKS.'

And all that for what? Not for the general good of society, but for the power and the glory of the great man himself, for the satisfaction of his vices.

The fact that 'he is hated and detested by all mankind makes him inwardly satisfied. Otherwise, why should he stand at the head of a multitude of prigs, called an army, in order to molest his neighbours, to introduce rape, rapine, bloodshed and every kind of misery on his own species, to desire maliciously to rob those subjects, to reduce them to an absolute dependence on his own will, to betray the interest of his fellow-subjects, of his brethren.'

Jonathan Wild: 'I ought rather weep with Alexander, that I have ruined not more.'

Another target of the author are the hypocritical priests: 'Life is sweet, I had rather live to eternity ... so many wallow in wealth and preferment.'

He insults the ordinary, who attends to the spiritual needs of condemned criminals; 'You are more unmerciful to me than the Judge.'

Henry Fielding's forceful diatribe against all conquerers, tyrants, pollitrickers, and vicious 'prigs' still sounds extremely modern.

He blames the majority of mankind to continue to praise the said great men.

But, 'there are still some, who view these great men with a malignant eye and dare affirm that these great men are always the most pernicious and generally the most wretched and truly contemptible of all works of creation.'

This book is a ferocious and, unfortunately, still very topical satire.

Mediocre

This book was just okay. It is written completely tongue in cheek like the other Fielding books I've read, but wasn't quite as amusing. The characters were not particularly well developed, and the story lacked substance. The Heartfree's story was pretty good, but was Mrs. Heartfree really so amazing that every man who ever saw her fell madly in love with her? After about the fifth one it got a little tiresome.

I received a message that my two orders for today, July 27, had been downloaded onto my Kindle, but they have not.
I usually receive them immediately - but it's been too long, and I fear they have not been loaded for my Kindle. I've had no problems downloading books this week, but then a box popped up about whether I use Windows 8. I expected it to be a bit fluffy, but it was much darker.

Barbie Girl has the potential to be a great YA read, if not for a few minor flaws and one fairly big one. I'll get to that; first, let me tell you all the things that are right about this book.

Barbie is a damaged girl from a broken home. Not damaged in the way everyone thinks; she wears a tough skin, flirts and teases to get what she needs, and doesn't let anyone give her any crap for it. Everyone thinks she is nothing more than drugged out crazy slut. Though she doesn't argue with them, she is none of those things. What she really is, is a poor girl with a drugged out crazy mother and an autistic little brother who relies on Barbie for care. Barbie will do anything to graduate and get Everett away from Alabama and their mother. Graduating means passing Algebra, which she currently is not doing. Hoping Dylan can tutor her into graduation, she bites the bullet and asks for his help. Something she does not often do and especially not from Dylan.

I liked Barbie, quite a lot actually. She's a rare beast in the teen world. The skirts she wears would put me in an early grave if I was her mother, but she's a good girl at heart. Always there to take care of everyone else with no thought to herself.

Dylan has all the makings of a good guy, if he could just get out of his own head and the perfect imaginary world he's designed there. He wants to do the right thing but he's so far out of the loop that he doesn't always realize what that is. Dylan aggravated me, often, but to no fault of his own. It's more through circumstance than choice and I could empathize with him, for the most part.

Acosta created some very intriguing characters. Not only with Barbie and Dylan but also their families and friends. Third, Dylan's best friend, is amazing. I loved him from start to finish. If only we could all have a Third in our lives. Roxie, a goth (ish ~ her room is pink, and she listens to Taylor Swift) girl comes in late to the story but in a huge way. I liked her very much too and hope to get much more of both of these two in Barbie World (book #2).

This book did not take me where I thought it would. I expected it to be a bit fluffy (really, her name is Barbie Starr), but it was much darker. Barbie is not a little princess with normal teenage girl problems. Her life is tragic and Dylan is the first bright spot she's ever allowed herself to hope for. But life never works out quite like we hope for, does it? The ride these kids take is tragic and heartbreaking at its core and it's not the happiest of endings. This isn't a fairytale where Malibu Barbie gets her Ken and they drive off into the sunset in a pink convertible Corvette, missing every speed bump in the way.

The problems I mentioned earlier are few and small. Except for one. The one major thing that holds this novel back is the editing. Now, I am a fan of indie authors and read a ton of self published books and usually make no comments about editing. I understand how incredibly hard it is to self edit and to pay for professional editing. That said, Barbie Girl needs it and I hope it becomes successful enough to get a bit of extra help there because the story itself is a good one. But there were too many times where I felt like I was reading a print out from one of those software programs where you speak and it types it for you. Too many words were, well... just wrong. I am not going to say any more about it though, I understood what was happening throughout the book and that is really what matters. I just know some have a problem with it and I would not feel right not mentioning it.

I also want to take a second to applaud Acosta for dealing with some fairly mature subject matter without ever making it feel cheap or too sleazy or crude. I think she really kept her target audience in mind and wrote a book about struggle, growth, love, responsibility and bravery.

Enjoyable story; some frustrating parts to it, but it did keep me reading

When I bought this book at another retailer, the words "Baby Doll Series" were not beside the title, so that ending came as a surprise to me. Was not expecting a cliffhanger and that this was going to be a continuation series, a four-part series at that. I have to admit the ending annoyed me some, leaving me just a little frustrated. More than that, though, I was frustrated by the hero. Man, did Dylan gall me at times. I know he's a teen-age boy, both leads are in high school, and teenagers have growing up to do, but Barbie was twice the person Dylan was.

Yes, this YA story has the troubled teen going on; Barbie is literally from the wrong side of the tracks. She's got the neglected little brother, the falling-down house, the negligent, drug-addicted mother, and she's got a bad-girl rep at school. But even with all that, stuff that's been done before, I still cared about Barbie and even came to love her. I cried at a couple points in the story. Poor Barbie trying to be something, longing for a better life, longing for something good, something like Dylan, but that's one problem I have with this romance: I don't think he's good enough for HER.

I kind of liked him at first. He's got the nerd thing working for him, and I do love a cute nerd hero. But he is so hung up on little freaking perfect Katie. Katie is the mean girl, the fake girl, and when Dylan looks at her, she is a slow-motion reel of beauty and grace. I hated her. And I began to hate him for being fake like her. Yes, it is high school with all the requisite drama, but I was so angry at him for saying he loved Barbie but would still find himself wrapped up in Katie. There is some angst there, seeing Dylan with his arm around Katie, kissing Katie, but he is upset with Barbie and his best friend, Third. A big misunderstanding there. But still, I expected more from Dylan. He's so caught up in appearances, in right and wrong, and he's so judgmental.

His character definitely needs to grow some, to evolve, and I guess the author plans to show us that as the series continues. Sometimes his character made no sense to me, but maybe I'm too long out of high school and don't understand teen-age boys. As it stands now, I have no desire to even see Barbie with him. I can only hope that the author puts some good grovel time in store for Dylan. I would relish that. I'm a mean old woman who wants him to suffer. As the story ends, I'm hopeful of that because the author at least shows us Barbie showing fake boy and his fake girlfriend that Barbie can give as good as she gets. Can you tell I like Barbie? She's the stand-out of the story. She makes this story.

I also loved Third. I LOVED him, the chubby cutie, so sincere and steadfast. I was to the point of thinking, Barbie, pick him, pick him, and forget Dylan. I can't tell you how lovable Third is. There is a prom scene that was so sweet. Kind of reminded me of "Pretty In Pink," and I loved that movie. Very similar feeling here in this story. Girl thinks she's not good enough, when really it's the boy not good enough for her. Plus, Barbie ends up with some quirky, lovable new friends, and I guess Third would be Duckie. And then, we have that prom scene, with Barbie in her second-hand, 'vintage' dress. Very PIP.

In this first story, we see Barbie pretending to be Dylan's girlfriend. She'll up his cool factor if he tutors her, all the while Dylan is hoping this will increase his appeal to Katie. But along the way, people fall in love, the ones you think will fall and some you're not expecting to. There is also some heart-breaking violence, under-age drinking, some language, and mild sexual situations. The story leaves the reader very much hanging, a lot of loose ends to tie up. I do think I will read the next part of the series, if only to see what happens to Barbie.

The story is told in first-person, alternating from both leads' points of view, and I do happen to like that in a story. There are typos and editing issues in this book, commas needed here and there, punctuation issues, run-on sentences and several misspelled words, just things that I do notice, but I do tend to give allowance to that if the story pulls me in. And BARBIE GIRL did do just that. It's very teen YA with high school drama, and I think for the price it is worth checking out. Overall, I enjoyed BARBIE GIRL and the drama. Even with the issues mentioned, there is heart to this story, and it all centered around a vulnerable but tough, young heroine.

I'm really enjoying Barbie and Dylan's stories. This book wasn't what i thought it would be at all. Yeah ok so i thought "Barbie Girl", this is going to be another hot stuck up girl who wants to be popular and hurt everyone along the way. OMG! I was soooo wrong. This book is nothing like that at all.
Barbie might look like the typical Barbie Doll but she does not act like one at all. She is just a confused girl trying to numb her problems away. Until the day Dylan comes into her life that is and everything changes. I love Dylan but i was so frustrated with him only seeing barbie in the way all the rumors at school portrayed her to be. Boys are so naive. Dylan starts to tutor Barbie in math and as they spend time together he starts to see Barbie in a new way. Barbie doesn't care what people say about her. She's just Barbie, messed up family and all. Dylan wants so much to be able to be like her but can't get over the fact of what the kid at school might think.

Barbie has finally let the walls around her heart fall down to let Dylan in. Shes actually falling really hard for him. They are great until there is a huge miss understanding at Thirds house, Dylan's supposed best friend.. Dylan wont let Third or Barbie explain and turns his back on them. Ok, I'm thinking huge jerk now.

What do you think Dylan does now? Stupid Stupid boy..

I love Third. He reminds me of a great friend I had back in high school. He's a bit chubby and awkward but a great friend. The one's you could just be yourself with and let loose. Third understands Barbie and he see's her for what she truly is inside. Barbie has never had a friend like him before.

Barbie isn't all tight clothes and bad attitude. Shes got a soft side screaming to come out. that is if you just let her be herself and get beyond that huge wall she's put up.

I am seriously in ah of what that girl went through. No one should ever be put in a situation like that. oh and whats with the ending?? OMG! I checked goodreads looking for the next book. I don't see it. please oh please tell me its coming soon. I need more Dylan and Barbie and so will you once you've read this really great book. . :)

George MacDonald was a Scottish author and minister best known for his fairy tales and fantasy novels. A theologian, MacDonald was pastor of Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel before moving to London to teach at the University of London. MacDonald s work influenced many fantasy writers including J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L Engle; he is recognized as a mentor to Lewis Carroll and heavily influenced Carroll s decision to submit Alice s Adventures in Wonderland for publication. MacDonald was a prolific writer, and penned such fantasy classics as Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, and Lillith. George MacDonald died in 1905.

It deals extensively with a boy's search to know God personally while struggling with the concepts about God presented to him by his extremely strict Calvanist grandmother who raises him. It contains some of the best advice on Christian ministry that I have seen in a novel and I recommend this book highly. If you only want an entertaining book this may not be the best one since it is written in the phonetic Scottish accent, which can be difficult to understand. A few times I had to read it aloud in order to comprehend what he was saying. Still, the content is absolutely excellent, the story is entertaining (if you can get around the accent) and I am going to buy this book for my personal library when I can get some money together.

To know God is to obey God.

Robert Falconer should, in my opinion, be required reading for all who profess the faith of Christianity. The plot is simple and straightforward in that it does no more than recount the life and times of one man, Robert Falconer. Yet the lessons taught would be well-heeded by all who proclaim the Son of Man as Lord and Savior of their lives.
The story vividly portrays the misery, despair, confusion, hope, and all-consuming search of one small boy as he makes the arduous journey into manhood-a journey that too few seem either willing or able to make. Robert is forced to put away childish things, to submit to a stronger will and greater power than his own. He learns, not from his pious and orthodox grandmother, but from a bitter battle of endurance between God and self that the Father and Creator of all is also the greatest servant of all. He discovers that it is not through ritual and church service, not through hymns and rote prayers, but through service and obedience that one may know God truly. In order to serve God, one must serve his fellow creatures. There is no other way-"faith without works is dead."
This novel is founded upon a search-Robert's search for his Heavenly Father and his earthly father. While the plot line may not contain the action and intrigue desired of many, it is a perfectly realistic account of the battle that ensues when anyone would truly know God. It is the conflict between life and death. In my opinion, there is no greater battle to chronicle.
I invite you, nay beseech you, to walk alongside Robert Falconer as he begins a pilgrimage to Eternity. You will uncover much you may have forgotten of your own struggles, or you may find that your battle has not yet begun. If you can read this book with no pangs of conscience, no convictions of guilt, no mists of doubt, no desire to search your own heart, no compulsion to seek your Father then you are, indeed, to be commended or damned.

I love this book!

I was introduced to this story 25 years ago through the abridged version by Michael Phillips, for which I am thankful. But the original is infinitely superior. So glad it was available for the Kindle, though I actually read it on my iPhone.
