Shamefully bad editing - riddled with typos

I don't know if the print version is similarly flawed but the kindle version of this book is so full of typos that I believe I deserve a refund. My favorite typo thus far: "the twenty two feces of famous people staring vacantly in her direction"

The problem is pervasive enough to interfere with the meaning of the text. This is a decent and interesting book (though not Patchett's best) but the kindle version is substandard and should be pulled and corrected. It's just ridiculous.

Great characters.

Not Ann Pachett's best work (unquestionably Bel Canto) but enjoyable all the same.
The characters range from stock to surprising and one of the things I liked best about this book were the interactions between characters from drastically different worlds, something I have seen in all of the Ann Pachett books I have read. This book explores a "sidekick" type character who is her own strong individual person and yet somehow also a supporting character in many aspects of her own life.

Another fabulous book by Ann Patchett!

Maybe I am biased when it comes to Ann Patchett but I just loved loved loved this book. Wonderful story about Sabine who is wife, partner and friend for more than 20 years to Parsifal, a magician. After Parsifal dies Sabine finds out that he has a Mother, two sisters and two nephews living in Nebraska that she never knew anything about. The book is about love and relationships, family, magic, secrets and friendship. So beautifully written, just loved it highly recommend.

He was going to war. Two days later, his tank sunk, he and his crew landed from a rubber dinghy with just the clothes they stood in. After that, the struggles through the Normandy bocage in a replacement tank (of the non-swimming variety), engaging the enemy in a constant round of close encounters, led to a swift mastering of the art of tank warfare and remarkable survival in the midst of carnage and destruction. His story of that journey through hell to victory makes for compulsive reading.

About the Author
Stuart Hills was 20 years old when he joined a tank regiment preparing to spearhead the D-Day landings. His parents and sister were in Hong Kong, prisoners of the Japanese, their fate unknown. One of the few surviving officers in the regiment at the end of the war, he went on to a successful business career.

A good tanker's tale

First off I should say this book probably deserves five stars just for its very existence. Tankers from WW2 do not seem to have written very much and any works are sorely needed. Perhaps the casualty rate for tankers was too high. Anyway, Mr Hills delivers a solid account of his time as a tank and scout platoon leader (Sherman and Stuart tanks) with the British Sherwood Rangers. Mr Hills saw considerable action from D-Day itself through to the end of war in Germany. Overall he does a fine job of describing his experiences.
What keeps the book form earning five stars is that, first of all, he skimps on the details of most of his actions as well as his equipment and day-to-day duties. Mr Hills had a real opportunity to inform the reader of what it was really like to be a tanker. Unfortunately he just does not go into enough detail. He doesn't even tell you what versions of the Sherman he was on (and every German gun is an 88mm). A couple of his battle accounts approach a fair level of detail but always end-up just shy of really letting you know what happened and he rarely makes you feel like you are reliving the action with him.
My second complaint is that Mr Hills is British and unfortunately, for readers not from the UK, writes like one. What I mean is that he uses lots of references to all things British that are simply lost on the non-British reader. Starting with his childhood school experiences right through to various pop-culture references he simply assumes the reader understands all things British. This is not a huge distraction from the book but does add to the somewhat distant feel too it (along with the semi-formal, British stiff-upper-lip thing). This tendency combined with the lack of overall detail makes for a less than stellar read and is certainly history's loss.
Overall Mr Hill does do a good job and the book is interesting and informative. The problem is simply that there are so few tankers' tales that it is a shame he did not take the book the extra mile.

He has held leadership positions at ACNielsen, Citicorp, and Procter & Gamble and has held positions on the board of directors of the Australian professional basketball team the Sydney Kings and the American Chamber of Commerce in New South Wales, Australia. He lives in Connecticut.

Both simplistic and prescient, this book should be required reading by all people, at all levels, of all organizations.
Nothing here is new, but all of it is so critical to a brand's success that it needs to be posted on all doorposts.
I've heard it said that people don't need instructing as much as they need reminding, and this book is a concise, clear, tight little ditty that really could help your organization (and you) reframe your perspective.
And it's a gentle reminder for all to keep their eyes focused on the important relationships.
Who is important?
The guy how cuts your company a check.
The guy that recommends you to his friends.
The guy that comes back, time after time.
Treat them right, do the right thing.
This is a must have. Buy them by the box, I think I will make it part of my holiday gift distribution this year.

Account Management

This book is about managing client relationships in a service economy, with a focus on the role of the account manager. The author was CEO of a market research firm serving Fortune 500 clients. To illustrate the importance of the account manager role, he quotes the CEO of a consumer goods company which derives 40% of its business from Wal-Mart: "If we are not servicing them just right... our business is dead." The book offers 50 tips, each presented in an easily digestible two or three page chapter.

Some of the rules deal with doing your homework. Rule #1 is "know your products." If a client asks if your firm has a certain capability and you have to get back to them, it sends a message that it is not one of your firm's core strengths. Also, being aware of the full range of capabilities enables you to make the client of aware of them when relevant opportunities surface.

Several of the rules are about building strong relationships. "Decisions today get made by a large degree of consensus and often by committee. Having a strong relationship with one person may not be enough for you to hold on to an account. And trust me--if something goes wrong, you definitely want to have lots of friends."

Rule #29 is to make the best out of a bad situation. "Simple acts can diffuse gravely difficult situations in any business... Think about it. When you are sitting on a plane that is stuck on a tarmac because of a snowstorm, does it help if the pilot routinely gives you an update, or do you like to be kept in the dark? ... Similarly, when things go wrong with a client, find ways to mitigate the pain--and do it quickly... Timely communication and updates are always critical."

Some of the rules are internally focused. Rule #49 is about keeping your behind-the-scenes staff informed. "If nothing else, it raises their morale and energy."

The book concludes with Rule #50: exude quite confidence. "The most successful client service executives always seem to possess the simplest quality: quiet confidence. They are not loud or arrogant. They are not mean; they are even-tempered. They are steady and sure-handed. They bring passion and energy to their work. They are undeterred in the face of difficulty. They may want to scream, but they never do. They don't hate problems; they love solving them. Great servicing occurs when you truly love the game of servicing and have the confidence to get the job done with maturity and grace."
