The Accident, by Chris Pavone

From the author of the New York Times-bestselling and Edgar Award-winning The Expats

As dawn approaches in New York, literary agent Isabel Reed is turning the final pages of a mysterious, anonymous manuscript, racing through the explosive revelations about powerful people, as well as long-hidden secrets about her own past. In Copenhagen, veteran CIA operative Hayden Gray, determined that this sweeping story be buried, is suddenly staring down the barrel of an unexpected gun. And in Zurich, the author himself is hiding in a shadowy expat life, trying to atone for a lifetime’s worth of lies and betrayals with publication of The Accident, while always looking over his shoulder.

Over the course of one long, desperate, increasingly perilous day, these lives collide as the book begins its dangerous march toward publication, toward saving or ruining careers and companies, placing everything at risk—and everyone in mortal peril.  The rich cast of characters—in publishing and film, politics and espionage—are all forced to confront the consequences of their ambitions, the schisms between their ideal selves and the people they actually became.

The action rockets around Europe and across America, with an intricate web of duplicities stretching back a quarter-century to a dark winding road in upstate New York, where the shocking truth about the accident itself is buried.

Gripping, sophisticated, layered, and impossible to put down, The Accident proves once again that Chris Pavone is a true master of suspense.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* New York literary agent Isabel Reed plows through an anonymous manuscript in one night and immediately knows two things: The manuscript, a biography of a media mogul, will be a blockbuster, and people will die if word of its existence leaks. She’s also fairly sure she knows who the author is, but he’s dead. Word does leak, in New York and Hollywood, and ambitious young women in publishing quickly die violently. Isabel and her chosen editor, Jeffrey Fielder, are on the run from resourceful, relentless killers. Pavone’s plot twists tirelessly, shifting focus among a large cast of well-drawn characters and using flashbacks and changes of locale (Copenhagen, Zurich, Manhattan, Hollywood, the Hamptons) to build suspense. The Accident is a somewhat more conventional thriller than Pavone’s fine debut (The Expats, 2012), but he excels at developing characters’ backstories. Isabel and Jeffrey, for example, are successful but frightened that changes in their business and the onset of middle age might make them has-beens, and they’re both recalling the mutual attraction they once had but didn’t act on. Like Isabel, many readers will read this one through the night. --Thomas Gaughan

UNAUTHORIZED BIOS CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH
By Red Rock Bookworm
What author Chris Pavone gives us in his new novel "The Accident" is a series of "ones". One day in the lives of a group of inter-related characters , one explosive non-fiction manuscript that threatens the very lives of many of these individuals, and one ruthless media mogul and his assorted cronies bent on keeping the manuscript from ever being published. Unlike Pavone's first novel "The Expats" which dealt primarily with spies, this story is set in the world of publishing with side trips into political maneuvering and dirty dealing performed under the guise of national security.

It appears that the world of publishing is filled with individuals who will do whatever it takes to survive in a cut-throat business. (Ditto for CIA and FBI operatives.) From New York literary agent Isabel Reed and her assistant Alexis to owner/publisher Brad McNally and his editor Jeffrey to subsidiary rights director Camilla Glyndon-Browning, each sees the anonymous submission as a ticket to success, while CIA Copenhagen station chief Hayden Gray is trying desperately to hold on to his own "golden ticket."

Although all the action takes place in one day it does initially take a bit of concentration to keep the cast straight since the author moves back and forth in time via the various characters recollections of old secrets and lies and more recent revelations. No spoilers here but I will say that the end of this book contains an extra layer of complexity that elevates the story from average to remarkably satisfying. 31/2 stars

Illusion? Reality? It's All The Same.
By Bonnie Cehovet
Chris Pavone has a winner here! It took me a couple of chapters to get the rhythm of the book, but I ended up loving it. A well written story-line that keeps the reader turning the pages, with just enough reality to make it believable. The story revolves around literary agent Isabel Reed, and a mysterious, anonymous manuscript that she receives. She is both drawn to it, and terrified by it. The revelations in this book form a web that encompasses secrets involving a powerful media media empire, its owner, government agencies and officials, and a secret from Isabel's own past.

The manuscript could be a career maker for many people .. including Isabel's young assistant,Alexis; Camilla, an ambitious rights director searching for a golden parachute; Stan, a larger than life producer in LA, by Brad, a struggling publisher in New York, and by Isabel's friend Jeff, a veteran editor. It could also get them killed.

Each character is well scripted, and the movement between them flows seamlessly. They each have their strengths, and their flaws. In the background we have the anonymous author, who is supposed to have committed suicide, and a CIA type operative that ... isn't.

This is all about betrayal at the highest levels, and how one incident can form a shadow over so many lives, for their entire life. All of this action takes place within the space of one day ... 24 hours. Well worth a read!

Pavone's The Accident Is Destined For Bestseller Lists And Its Getting There Will Be No Accident!
By bobbewig
Pavone's The Accident, the follow-up to his very good first novel, The Expats, has all the makings of a bestseller. Its plot is fast-paced and exciting, its characters are credible and its narrative makes the reader feel that he/she is "right there" in the middle of the excitement.

So, here's a bit of what The Accident is about to whet your appetite.

A female, NYC literary agent has just finished reading a manuscript by an anonymous author that provides mysterious revelations about some very powerful people -- one of whom is a billionaire media mogul, as well as long-hidden secrets about her own past. It is a manuscript that she feels will explode its way onto bestseller lists, and help rejuvenate her career as well as that of the editor she's chosen to help get this book published. A very experienced CIA operative is determined that this story stay buried, and is willing to "remove" anyone exposed to the manuscript. And, The Accident is about the anonymous author himself who is "living in shadows" in Copenhagen, trying to atone for a lifetime's worth of lies and betrayals by wanting to get his book published.

Needless to say, these lives collide as the book begins on the path towards publication and towards saving or ruining careers and companies...a path that places everything at risk and everyone in danger of their lives.

Is The Accident great literature? Definitely not. What it is, however, is an exciting, entertaining and suspenseful thriller that demonstrates that Pavone's successful debut with The Expats was no accident. The one minor criticism I have is that the book tends to jump too much back and forth between time periods, characters and geographic locations; which, at times, made me feel I needed a scorecard to keep track of things. Despite this perceived flaw, The Accident is a book I think most thriller lovers will enjoy.

I received an eBook of The Accident from the publisher and NetGalley in return for an honest, objective review; which is what I've provided. I hope you find my review helpful in helping to decide if The Accident is a book for you.

Excellent Explanation of the SIJ
By M. Gray
I purchased this book to research and educate myself about my horses’ sacroiliac joint and back problems. My horse fell running in the field when he was 3 and gave himself a huge hunters bump. Though he healed as best he could from the injury, I still wanted to understand what had happened and how to avoid aggravating this old injury. If you're looking for a how to ride book this isn't it. This book takes you deep into how the horses spine, sacrum and hip all work together and problems that can arise from incorrect balance of the spine. It has great pictures and explains how the muscles and joints work. It gave me a better understanding of what was wrong. I am also a certified equine body worker and work on all types of horses primarily barrel racers which are often sore in their rear quarters. This book has given me a deeper and practical understanding of what is going on in the rear quarters and spine. As a dressage rider and retired vet tech, this book is technical in it's writing, but not to the point you can't comprehend or follow what the author is saying.

fitting climax to a strong trilogy
By A Customer
Lord Wade is the toast of society until a riding accident blinds him. Unable to listen to the sounds of so called sympathy and "seeing" the pity in their eyes, Simon becomes a recluse, living a quiet life with his shy sister and grandmother.

In 1845, Simon's grandmother hires a companion Louisa Shelby without consulting him. Louisa and her sisters saw their world end when their father committed suicide; with her siblings settled in happy marriages, she looks forward to the single life as elderly Lady Wade's companion. To her amazement, Louise is attracted to Simon and him to her as she brings him back to life with her Ă©lan and enthusiasm helping his sister in turning more comfortable with men as well; but he assumes it is pity on her part not a passionate love like he feels so he ends their relationship abruptly. He is already hearing nasty rumors about her.

The third and final tale in the Sisters of Willow Pond miniseries (see the other Shelby siblings' tales, THE LORD NEXT DOOR and The Duke in Disguise) is an incredibly deep Victorian romance that focuses on the impact of blindness on more than just the individual as each member of his family feels the effect immensely especially since he was their leader. Readers will feel for Simon as he comes out of his self imposed shell due to Louisa although he ahs doubts about his beloved's motives. This is a fitting climax to a strong trilogy with a powerful cast that makes for a terrific historical.

A good read with a twist
By Amazon Customer
This is the first book that I read in this time in which a man has such an obvious deformity. I have not read the previous books in this series, but I don't think that it made the book any less enjoyable and I did not feel lost at all. It is a good book though the author's writing style was a bit plain and forced. The story was great and you could see the couple slowly fall in love. Though the viscount was blind, I love that he was not portrayed as weak (only in rare occasions) and that he was able to hold his own. Though he was blind, you could not help but o fall in love with him and I loved the way their romance slowly unraveled. Definitely recommend it. This was my first Gayle Callen book, and I will be in search of others.

Viscounts are people too
By viktor_57
I may be a man, and not just a man, but a revolutionary man, proud of my common origins, and I would sooner die a common death than bow my head to any duke, lord, or nobleman, but when I am not cleaning my musket, sharpening my guillotine, or practicing my close-quarter fighting formations, I am reading the Victorian romances of Gayle Callen and the struggles of the Shelby sisters, commoners who may be poor in pocket, but not poor in spirit.

"The Viscount in Her Bedroom" closes the "Sisters of Willow Pond Trilogy" with the story of Viscount Simon Wade, once London's most eligible bachelor and a man of the ladies. As a man of the people, I would have sooner run Simon through with my pike than allow him to oppress us common folk, but a terrible riding accident leaves him blind and shunned from society, reducing a once proud man to a shell of his former self.

Simon finds refuge at his grandmother's estate, and there meets Louisa Shelby, former London socialite and daughter of a wealthy merchant, but now reduced to poverty after her father's ruin and suicide. Simon's grandmother, the dowager Viscountess, ostensibly hired Louisa as her companion, but the wise old dowager might have had other motives for bringing Louisa into her home. Had the dowager brought me into her home, I would have led a revolt and spread the raging fires of liberty all across the beautiful, green countryside. Georgie, Simon's sister, also comes to stay with her grandmother the Viscountess after a disastrous coming out at the court and the balls, and rounds out the household of social castaways.

Within the circumscribed world of the Lady Wade's estate, Simon learns to overcome his physical limitations but not the societal prejudices that he feels separates him from family and friends. Louisa knew the man that Simon once was and sees what he could be, but will Simon allow himself a little humility, see past the rumors of Louisa's reputation, and learn to accept her help and even love? He better, because the love of a common woman may be the only thing that saves him from the bloody judgment of revolutionary terror.

Callen draws her characters with fine detail and loving sympathy, allowing the reader to feel the tug of every heartstring of pain and desire. I string my crossbow with whipcord and the desire to spread freedom at the pain of a sharpened bolt, but after reading Callen's moving portrayal of two characters struggling against both society and themselves, only to find refuge in each other, I am moved to sympathize with a man whose humanity overcomes the titles and privileges of his birth. I never thought I would say this, but if I ever came across Simon, the Lord Wade, sneaking into Louisa's private chambers, I would put down my pike and allow the man to live as, dare I say it, the Viscount in her bedroom.

Deceptive book title
By Aaron R. Teitlebaum
I suspect this book was given its title to reel in buyers actually looking for the book "Guess How Much I Love You", which is the well-known origin of the line. The phrase isn't even used in the text of this book, though a similar one is. It's still a cute young children's book, there's nothing wrong with it otherwise, but I think the title is deceptive.

A disappointing book.
By susie winter
I bought this book because of the title, since it is a favorite saying of my grandchild's mother. I was disappointed that the phrase was not even used in the story. And the story was not very well written. All in all, I was sorry I had spent money on this book.

she will be so happy to have the book as a keepsake
By Sharon Queen
I have been saying "Love you to the moon and back" to my daughter for years. She is almost 10 and loves that I still say it. I'm giving her the book as a stocking stuffier, she will be so happy to have the book as a keepsake, since she thinks it is something I only say.

Fascinating and fearsome, gorgeous and grotesque - hooks you from the first page
By Bob Milne
Dirty Eden is a book that hooks you right from the first page, somehow managing to inject a little discomfort into the boring banality of an office commute. All it takes is a glimpse of a stiletto-heeled stranger to shake Norman's routine, and a stranger's offer of $500 to go back and talk to her is more than enough temptation to derail not just a commute, but a man's entire life.

That stranger is, of course, the Devil . . . and what he expects from Norman is far more than just your typical 'selling your soul' type of mythological transaction. As we soon discover, there are big stakes involved, with the fate of all Creation ultimately resting upon the shoulders of an otherwise unremarkable man who dared to ask himself "What can it hurt?"

Before long we find ourselves accompanying Norman on an underworld journey which echoes those of Odysseus, Dante, and Chris Nielsen, but which adds its own unique spin on not just the journey, but the mythologies that overlap and combine to approximate the truth of our reality. It's a journey that's as fascinating as it it fearsome, through a landscape as gorgeous as it is grotesque. I think it was the moment that the naked, seductive fairy emerged from the forest, volunteering to have her wings ripped off as the price of Norman's passage across the Field of Yesterday, that I realized there was no escaping this book until I saw how it all would end.

This is a very dark book, and one that doesn't shy away from the darkness inside us all. Whether Norman is being confronted by the truth about himself, his family, or society at large, we're invited to bear witness to the worst acts of which mankind is capable - rape, murder, incest, adultery, theft, etc. There's not a lot of hope to the story, but there is a redeeming quality to Norman's personal growth that propels us along. It's also a very complex book, and one that is equally capable in delivering twists in plot as twists in mythology. Nothing is quite what it seems here, and the worst mistake you can make in reading the story is to assume you know what the Devil, Norman, or the author truly intend.

Having dreaded a literary betrayal, fully expecting a typically biblical end to the story, I was delighted to discover a climax worthy of the story that precedes it, an action-filled, suspense-laden, treacherous piece of storytelling that pulls together all of the various characters and themes into an entirely satisfying resolution. More than that, I have to applaud Jessica for a final twist that is as glorious as it is unexpected.

Down the Wicked, Evil Rabbit Hole We Go!
By K. Dome
Another wonderful entry from J.A. Redmerski, that DEFINITELY appeals to a more mature, dark minded audience!

From the opening line of this book, you immediately have that page-turning feel that accompanies a well written story. There were times I couldn't wait to read the next part, I felt like I wanted to skip ahead and cheat to see what happens to the characters. When I had to stop at the end of the night, I felt the need to get back to finish it. This was not a good thing when you have to work in the morning.

The book has a whole "down the rabbit hole" feel to it, which was a refreshing feeling when you consider the mythology it was dealing with. You were able to get lost into a story that you had never heard before, and which was completely original - despite incorporating characters such as The Devil, which can be an absolute hit, or a horrific miss when you incorporate him into ANY story. This portrayal, was definitely a refreshing hit! Deceitful, vindictive, wicked - all rolled up into a pretty, evil package.

The main character of Norman was relatable, which was good, even though I personally didn't really feel that I liked him. At least not until the end... but I won't talk about that as I don't want to spoil anything for you. The side characters which accompanied Norman in his trek was really what made this book to me. Each character had such depth and personality to them that it made me wanting more when I got to the end. The final situations that each character ended up in left a yearning in me to know more... What about Tsaeb, Sophie, and Taurus!?!?!?

The writing and the imagery in the entire book was beautiful, and could really paint pictures in my head which is something that I look for in a good book. "Dirty Eden" was definitely a wonderful book, and the ending had me on pins and needles hoping there is more to it all! It's an ending hook, that I hope is not just a tease!

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is of a more mature mind; are not offended by vulgar acts; disgusting situations; or themes some may consider "blasphemous". A GOOD READ!

I thought I had seen, or read, J. A. Redmerski in her best performance…
By Nanda AragĂ£o
I thought I had seen, or read, J. A. Redmerski in her best performance…

I thought I had seen J. A. Redmerski’s creativity in action…

I was COMPLETELY wrong!

When I finished this book I didn’t have, and probably still don’t have, words able to describe how wonderfully creative and exquisite this work is. This book was on my TBR list since the day I was presented to this author’s writing. Author who earned my respect, my admiration and my trust these past years. Unfortunately, I will always regret not having read this book before.

Many times the author herself said that of all the books she has written, this undoubtedly is her favorite, and I can honestly say I see why.

As the blurb describes, the book revolves around a mission given to Norman Reeves, an ordinary divorced man, who like many others is frustrated with the direction his life took, dissatisfied with his boring work, but who wakes up every day and follows the same routine ever. ‘Till one day, when in an unconventional meeting, Norman receives a mission, given by the Devil himself, to reverse the fall of man, the original sin.

The magnificent plot itself guarantees all the honorable mentions this author deserves. Not many authors are capable of, paraphrasing a Goodreads and Amazon’s reviewer (Skorpius), picking up one of the biggest stories out there (The Garden of Eden) and reinvent it in a way that s/he ends up creating a completely new, unusual and original story, making it as her/his own. J. A. Redmerski didn’t just rearrange a plot that already existed, or made a new reading of it. She created a completely new story, bringing new meaning to the several elements that we thought we knew and adding new ones that blew our minds.

Added to the phenomenal creativity she brought, we are given with a clean and extremely detailed narrative. I've said it once, and I reaffirm it today: J. A. Redmerski is not just a writer, or a mare author, she is an amazing storyteller. Since page one, the reader has his/her attention and curiosity captured. Each event, revelation, development, new character, surprise leaves us wondering what is yet to come. And the amount of details in the way she narrates every single scene, how she describes the scenarios, how she develops the characters, fascinate us.

Like all her books, Dirty Eden is full of twists that catch us off guard. Even its ending. The last sentence makes us wish a sequel could exist. It’s not that there is an open ending. The author wraps every detail of this story beautifully. However, we finish this book so delighted with what we’ve read and the high level of, once again, creativity in which it has been told, that we desperately wish to know how the rest of the story would be told.

Today I reaffirm that J. A. Redmerski is an author who has all the qualities an author must have, except, and unfortunately, the recognition she deserves. Her career doesn’t sum up to Andrew and Camryn, and her creativity is not limited to Victor his organization. There are sides of this author that still are little-known and deserve to be much more widespread.

Sigh…

I honestly feel I’m unable to write something that will do justice to this book, its greatness and perfection. As much as I can reaffirm my admiration for this author, for the level of creativity in this book, for the unexpected surprises in it, for the endless detailing in this narrative and how everything was created and developed with frightening precision and incredibly consistency, yet I fail to describe what she was able to do in this book.

So maybe the only thing that remains to be said is that, as much as I have an endless list of books I love, as much as I LOVE ‘The Edge of Never’, as much as I ADORE ‘In The Company Of Killers’, as much as I have been delighted with all of my readings by J. A. Redmerski and so many other authors I admire, and as much as I wish I could see all of those books in the big screen or a tv show, if I was given the choice to choose only ONE book of all books I have ever read, by this author or any other author, I would not think for a single moment before pointing Dirty Eden as my answer. Such is my desire to see every page, every word, every detail, character and scene of this book gaining life. A desire that reaches the level of need. While reading it, I felt every sentence of it gaining life in my imagination, but I desperately wish I can have the opportunity to see it one day portrayed on the big screen.

Last but not least, as the author herself alerted, this book is completely different from her other works, which proves once again her endless quality of being a highly diversified author, able to write one of the most beautiful and exciting love stories and one of the most creative fantasies I've ever seen, whether in books, films, series or theater.

Dirty Eden is a new breath that deserves its due recognition!

***

>> In this book there is NO romance! (Out of curiosity, I woke up in the middle of the night because of a nightmare. Yep! I’m NOT kidding!) This book is suitable for people who like fantasy, or have an eclectic literary taste, and definitely a more mature audience. I’d compare it to a mixture of Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Advocate, Constantine, Neverending Story, Lord of the Rings and books like that.

>> As a Christian, I don’t agree when it says this book is a blasphemy, because it is not a statement of faith. It IS one of the most magnificent works of FICTION I have ever had the pleasure to read. And I didn’t feel at any time any intention to disrespect anyone’s faith. Plus, I’m capable to distinguish reality from fiction.

>> Besides TEoN (which is my favorite book for personal reasons and reasons I don’t even understand), I got to the point of no longer being able to point out which book written by J. A. Redmerski is my favorite. Each one of her works is unique and stands out one of her endless qualities as an author.

Dirty Eden is definitely a book I recommend and is one of my all-time-favorites.

Superb simply superb.
By Angarai Vadhyar
A must for anyone who wants to draw faces. Perhaps the best book on the market. The author's English style is magnificent: lucid and elegant. A real pleasure to read. The introduction by the author is worth the price of the book.

Dull
By A Customer
There are many, many, many good books on how to draw faces. This isn't one of them. The illustrations lead you to believe that the guy has a hard time drawing himself. I was very disappointed.
