Unusually clear Jesuit priest's introduction to Aquinas

English Jesuit Father Frederick Copleston, immortalized as author of the monumental "History of Philosophy" still found in many large bookstores today, provides the best short introduction to St. Thomas Aquinas you will ever find. This Penguin Classics paperback features a brief biography of Copleston on the first page followed by his brilliant text. The great thing about Copleston is that he knows so much philosophy that he puts Aquinas in perspective like no other author. Rather than giving you a tunnel vision or highly specialized view of the Angelic Doctor, he gives you an Aquinas who is still relevant to philosophy today. I've perused a lot of different books on Aquinas, many of which are intimidating in their immersion in arcane scholastic terminology. Copleston writes in a clear and precise language that any introductory student will understand. I highly recommend this book. It's the best short introduction to Aquinas that I've ever seen.

Very Informative

With no real schooling in our aptitude for philosophy, I couldn't follow Aquinas, although I've always been very interested in his ideas, especially his rational proofs of the existence of God. Fr. Copleston's book was immensely helpful. His writing style is clear and elegant. He avoids technical philosophical jargon whenever possible and illustrates difficult concepts with everyday, real life examples. He also does a thorough job of comparing and contrasting Aquinas and his major influence, Aristotle. On occasion Copleston remarks on how Aquinas differs from Kant and other more contemporary thinkers; I wish there had been a little more of that as well, but I imagine his multi-volume History of Philosophy covers all that in detail. I think this book is a fantastic place to start for anyone interested in Aquinas and Middle Ages philosophy in general.

Father Copleston's book is an excellent introduction to the philosophy of St. Thomas. A man of great intellectual depth, Copleston's lucid style makes Aquinas good reading for both academic study and personal philosophical/spiritual enjoyment.

Both articles and this book I've just bought are being very useful and helpful in the writings of my master's degree thesis on "The genre problem and the short-short story". Charles E. May is a great scholar on short story theory. He goes deep but is very clear in what he writes. I am very thankful to him.

This dictionary by Hall (Armstrong Atlantic State Univ.) is a concise, accessible reference book on Haiti beginning with Columbus's landfall on the island of Hispaniola in 1492 and ending with the election of Michel Martelly as president in 2011. The volume features over 400 alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced entries. A focus is on political leadership--a major concern, given the large number of Haitian presidents who were either killed or forced to resign after only brief periods in office. Hall's dictionary updates Roland Perusse's Historical Dictionary of Haiti (CH, Oct'77). And it is twice the size (295 pages versus Perusse's 124 pages), contains more entries, and offers a more extensive bibliography (16 pages versus Perusse's 8 pages). Like Perusse, Hall offers a useful chronology and a topical listing of books covering art, literature, education, public health, sports, entertainment, geography, archaeology, the Haitian diaspora, folklore, and economics. He also provides 18 Internet sources. Hall's dictionary is strongest for the 20th century. Treatment of religion and culture are not as thorough as treatment of politics. Nevertheless, this new dictionary constitutes the most extensive single-volume reference work available on Haiti. Valuable Research Tool

Done well, historical dictionaries are important tools for scholars, students, and others interested in a particular area of history. And Professor Hall's Historical Dictionary of Haiti does it right. The key is in the selection of entries. Michael Hall, a well-regarded Latin American historian with first-hand experience in Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic, has selected for this dictionary a collection of A-Z content that covers the breadth of Haitian historiography. A front-to-back read of the book provides a useful foundation of survey-level knowledge of Haiti. In addition, individual entries capture the essence of each topic. For instance, the "Diaspora" entry concisely yet compellingly illustrates how tragic events and circumstances that too often have dominated Haitian history have compelled the migration of its people to other nations. Throughout the book, individual topics, events, and people viewed through the historian's lens are communicated in ways that most-appropriately place them within the larger context of Haitian history. Professor Hall's work would be a welcome addition to the library of anyone looking for a comprehensive and readable survey of Haitian history.

Excellent reference & historical resource guide !

I have worked in the non-profit emergency response and humanitarian field for over 25 years (including Haiti) and have shared this historical dictionary with colleagues and peers in other organizations. And they do not want to give it back ! It is an excellent refernce guide for all things Haitian, especially for those that are new to Haiti culture, history and politics. It is a must read and a great window into understanding Haiti and it's significant history, culture and people.

As a b-school grad I liked that it wasn’t too dumbed down

Wow – what a story! This book really captures the drama from the inside out. As a b-school grad I liked that it wasn’t too dumbed down. It actually addresses the bigger picture of how leadership impacts employees and customers, who are at the heart of any business. Overall, it’s a great read for someone interested in business lessons with some juicy details thrown in!

Pleasing story

At first glance, this may be a bit of a parochial book that can be capable of giving interesting insights, as it looks at the remarkable story of how many workers of the Market Basket supermarket chain in New England, USA and members of the public rose up to save the company’s ousted CEO, a man who was well-liked and respected by perhaps a lot more than he realised.
A few senior executives resigned in protest and then something fairly amazing and unique happened: managers and workers walked out to hold a rally (in their own time) and the word spread and even customers joined in. The company bunkered down, suppliers and vendors start to freeze deliveries, politicians got involved and it started to become a national news story and media circus. All over one fairly loved and respected CEO.
It could have been a Hollywood movie – it may even be one day – yet the whole affair ended on a knife-edge with the company being sold to a consortium headed by the ousted executive. Oh, yes, to add more to the drama, it was a family battle too!
A collection of notes and references are to be found at the end of the book yet it would be been desirable to have had in-line references or footnotes: this would not have affected the book’s pace or style and it would have been a little more helpful for those who want to dig deeper into this fascinating story.
So in this small book the reader is treated to a drama, given an essay about human life and provided with a good overview about management dealings and the trials and tribulations of family companies – all wrapped up into an engaging read and something that may be an unexpected find.

I live in metro Boston and every Sat. my Basket Buddy and I meet at the Burlington Market Basket to have coffee, chat and then shop. I converted to the Church of Artie T. last year and not only is my food shopping soul been saved but a good chunk of change as well. I watched all of the news casts last year. The book is good and should convert Bostonians and/or make those who live in the normal states of the USA envious. Today I went to the store where the "beautiful people" shop to buy a cup of coffee--that place where they celebrate diversity except if the diversity is not to their liking. This is the store that over charges people as a rule and frequently sells 10 ounces of produce but charges people for 16 ounces (yep, the food is not quite so whole). The guy in front of me spent $68 for one bag of food-- a not so whole bag of food. $68! By the way, the raised donuts at the Basket are the best. I am one American who does not run on Dunkin and prefer a cup of coffee at the Basket with their award winning (or should be) donut.
