Children around the world
By oldster
Published in 2002 so certainly some of the material is quite dated, but the pictures are good, and for someone not wishing to go in depth with facts, it does give an overview for kids in this country to see how fortunate they are in many ways.

My little 5 year old grand niece and nephew love this book. Their mother has a friend that travels the world and the kids love to look up the children of other countries that she visits to see how they live

beautiful--unique perspective on other cultures/people/places
By J. Boman
I love the format of this book. Rather than being structured around regions of the world (like most), it is formatted around basic human needs--clean water, healthy food, safe home, education, protection, love, an identity, freedom of religion and expression, etc... In the course of that, specific children from various countries are profiled throughout, with a focus on how that particular need is being met in their own life. The book is visually appealing, with a very reader-friendly lay out--well organized, colorful, and packed with beautiful photos. This book is perfect for kids and adults alike. It also handles tough issues such as exploitation of children through work and war sensitively, yet clearly. I bought this book to use in teaching a geography/world cultures class, along with several others, and this one really stands out!

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and ...
By Lou Ann Stowell
Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and sentimental because Bukowski I don't think would have appreciated it or thought it too trite expressing the elite-est "cuteness".

Bukowski wasn't cute or pretty in his writing...he wrote what he saw around him with an awake and aware in-the-moment presence that is reality. Reality is not pretty or kind. I love his writing for that.

Also I found the words to his dead love in the poems "for Jane: with all the Love I had, Which Was Not Enough:", "Notice", and "for Jane" more touching than anything I have read in a long time. The grief he felt was enormous, world wrecking and I identified with that grief since I lost my husband and soul mate two years ago. I cried on the evening train reading these poems and found myself saying aloud "He KNEW!"

No one that has lost such an integral part of themselves is able to express that sort of gut wrenching of a tribute without having truly loved and suffered greatly.

He made me laugh, think, gasp at the rawness of life I remember seeing living in the outskirts of San Francisco in the 70's. He took down a memory lane of my own childhood and re-examine myself in a way I haven't in a very, very long time.

I never met you, Chuck, but I feel like I knew you, I would buy you a drink at the races if I could. Thank you for being so brutishly honest and more clean in your observations about the world than 80% of the population.

Bukowski clean? Oh, yeah.

He stripped down things to what they actually are instead of what society likes to pretend them to be. That to me is a clean, healthy lungful of fresh air! He was vulgar in his language, but in case you haven't really stepped out of your cubicle or hide-y hole...the world IS vulgar, uncivilized and mean and a vast majority of us in the lower classes (which is damn near anyone under a million anymore) lives with that. We're your elderly on the pensions and social security, waitresses, garbage men, retail sales people, and secretaries. You know, the ones the upper classes can't live without because we are the professional maids and nannies and buttwipers making minimum wage to slightly over, but still in the poverty level that make their world go round. We see the unsanitized and unedited truth. Mother Nature is one cruel mother. Bukowski had the balls to say it!

Thank you again for your humanity and insight.

"I Have Been Alone But Seldom Lonely"
By Foster Corbin
THE PLEASURES OF THE DAMNED is a collection of Charles Bukowski's poems, 548 pages of them, many of them from earlier volumes of poetry, some of them never before published. For anyone familiar with Bukowski, there are few if any surprises here, rather a healthy sampling of this iconoclast's poetry. So very autobiographical, many of these poems are about the things Bukowski loved: the races, cats (you can learn from them), booze, poetry (he calls himself a poetry junkie), Wagner, sex (like Mahler, you do not rush it), some women. He can write a paean to a lover in "The Shower" but then say in another poem that American women, as opposed to Japanese women, "will kill you like they tear a lampshade." He is not reticent in writing about people and things he hates as well: some writers, especially Hemingway, whom he describes as "just a drunk"-- the irony is that in "a clean, well-lighted place," his description of Hemingway's use of his literary reputation to reel women in "one at a time" sounds like Bukowski himself-- critics, mindless work. (He pictures workers trapped in jobs that go nowhere as having "goldfish security.)

Nothing was immune from Bukowski's pen. Apparently he could write about any subject. There are poems here on the killing of elephants in Vietnam, a grammar school bully remembered, the ignorance of youth, a trip to the doctor, picturing himself in a nursing home, a conversation with death, an old car ("a poor man's miracle"), the abuse that both he and his mother suffered at the hands of his father (his mother had "the saddest smile I ever knew"), the homeless, the old, poor, sick and dying, throwing a radio out a window, etc., etc.

No one would say that Bukowski wrote "pretty" poems. On the other hand, we cannot deny that many of them go straight to the bone. In "eating my senior citizen's dinner at the Sizzler" (what a horrendous image) markers in modern cemeteries are "flat on the ground, it's much more pleasant for passing traffic." His world is inhabited by a sixty-five-year-old man with cancer who kills his sixty-six-year-old wife who has Alzheimer's and then kills himself and a house that is sad because it is inhabited with people who have mindless, dead-end jobs. For many of the people Bukowski writes about, "it's a lonely world/of frightened people,/just as it has always/been." On the other hand, in the poem entitled "mind and heart" (p. 523), he acknowledges that we are all alone, "forever alone" but goes on to say that "I have been alone but seldom lonely."

Reading Bukowski reminds you of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg--although he certainly is not derivative of any other writer-- but a case can be made that he is a lot closer in his mood and world view to some of the darker poems of both Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson than he probably would have acknowledged. There is a place in the parade of poets for anyone who speaks the truth: the Robert Frosts, the Emily Dickinsons, the Donald Halls, the Edwin Arlington Robinsons along with the Charles Bukowskis.

On balance, this is a great book
By A Customer
Grimmett & Stirzaker's book, *One Thousand Exercises in Probability, 2nd ed.,* contains exercises with answers/solutions to each and every exercise covering a wide range of topics from probability. Although this book is a companion to G & S's 3rd edition of *Probability and Random Processes,* the authors strove to make the *Exercises* book stand on its own.
The 2 previous reviewers took a widely different view of this book. I wanted to have a balanced approach to reviewing this book. I hope this helps.
-- This book has exercises that cover a wide range of topics in probability. It starts from basic issues in probability and eventually covers topics like queueing, Monte Carlo (& Markov Chain Monte Carlo), Ito's lemma & financial option valuation, etc. Any one vaguely interested in probability realizes that the topics covered by Grimmett & Stirzaker are *hot topics* and very useful to those who want to try to get a sense of how important probability theory is in real life. I can't think of a comparable book that is so ambitious and covers so much useful ground in one place. [At least not one with answers to every question.]
-- I am not personally familiar with Grimmett's work (I believe he is at Cambridge University). I am, however, familiar with Strizaker's work (he is at Oxford). I consider him to be one of the finest expositers of probability theory. Stirzaker's views on probability theory (which I read in a different work) is one of the most lucid and sensible I have ever come across. Anyone seriously interested in probability should try to get exposure to Stirzaker's thoughts on the matter.
-- I believe this book is GREAT for self-study. One of the major problems I have with many math, science, engineering, and other technical books is that -- even very good books -- do not provide answers/solutions to the questions they pose. As someone who is very interested in self-study, I find a book like this one -- which has the answers/solutions to ALL of the questons -- to be extremely refreshing and welcomed.
To address the prior criticism that this book does not contain a sufficient amount of detail in the solutions .... I would suggest that such a criticism is unfair. As I pointed out above (and most people know) it is very rare to have technical books like this where there are a great deal of interesting and useful exercises given plus answers/solutions to all of the questions posed. For 2 emminent Oxbridge dons to write such a book is even more exciting.
In all fairness, Grimmett & Stirzaker wrote this book with the intent that it be used along with an appropriate probability textbook(s). Any one willing to take the time to look at the solutions given along with a companion text should be able to work out what went wrong (or right) with any question that the reader attempts to work out.
In closing, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in going from a novice level at probability to a point where you can approach and solve useful problems in probability.

Lots of answers, not many solutions
By A Customer
This book was a big disappointment for me. I give it two stars for providing the answers to the problems. It would get much more if it actually provided adequate solutions to the problems. It is a good book if you know basically how to do the problems and just want to check answers. I guess I'm just stupid because I could use some guidance for starting and proceeding through the problems. The "solutions" often omit what I would deem to be crucial startup steps for many of the problems; without those critical steps, the "solution" that is given (which sometimes consists of nothing but the final answer) can be extremely difficult to comprehend. I had high hopes when I purchased this book; I thought it would be well worth my money to get solutions to the problems so I could figure out the errors in my reasoning. Unfortunately I was gravely mistaken.

Other reviews indicate that this is typical and I would agree, it's not written to those who need help but those who have a strong grasp on the topic. It doesn't matter to me who has written a book, if it's not helpful it's just not worth the money.

What a Great Book!
By Gets Around
This book is so good. It's really a non-trivial treatment of probability, so don't buy it thinking you're going to solve a bunch of problems like "what's the probability of rolling snake eyes twice in a row?" It's a much higher level than that. But if you're at the right level, this book is an incredibly compendium of fabulous problems and solutions. It was truly a labor of love to write this book and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth by award-winning author Frank Cottrell Boyce, with illustrations by Steven Lenton, will send your imagination into orbit!

The Blythes are a big, warm, rambunctious family who live on a small farm and sometimes foster children. Now Prez has come to live with them. But, though he seems cheerful and helpful, he never says a word.

Then one day Prez answers the door to someone claiming to be his relative. This small, loud stranger carries a backpack, walks with a swagger and goes by the name of Sputnik.

As Prez dithers on the doorstep, Sputnik strolls right past him and introduces himself to everyone in the household. Prez is amazed at the response. The family pat Sputnik on the head, call him a good boy and drop food into his mouth. It seems they all think Sputnik is a dog. It's only Prez who thinks otherwise.

But Prez soon finds himself having to defend the family from the chaos and danger unleashed by Sputnik, as household items come to life - like a TV remote that fast-forwards people: 'Anyone can do it, it's just that people don't read the instructions properly'; and a toy lightsaber that entertains guests at a children's party, until one of them is nearly decapitated by it - and Prez is going to have to use his voice to explain himself.

It turns out that Sputnik is writing a guidebook to Earth called Ten Things Worth Doing on Earth, and he takes Prez on a journey to discover just those ten things. Each adventure seems to take Prez nearer to the heart of the family he is being fostered by. But they also take him closer to the day that he is due to leave them forever . . .

Classic Kaufmann!
By D. Roberts
Princeton's own Walter Kaufmann has devised another book that fits a central category of his lifelong interest: the nexus between philosohy and art. More specifically, he engages that topic of philospohy and its relationship to tragedy.

Being a philosopher, one would think that Kaufmann would write a book of literary criticism that is somewhat condescending to the poets. He does no such thing. While he does offer some literary criticism, he also uses the paradigms of the poets to go after the philosophers. This is an unexpected approach, and also a unique one.

One cannot read one of Kaufmann's books without admiring his erudition. It's not just a matter of his knowing his material but knowing it inside & out. His scholarship can be downright intimidating at times. This fact may serve as a warning for those considering this book to become at least somewhat familiar with its subject matter before delving into Kaufmann.

That said, Kaufmann is not for everyone. He is not one to pull any punches when it comes to artists and scholars whom he does not care for. He has been known to launch intellectual uppercuts from his books. This aggressive style may not be appreciated by all readers.

If you are interested in tragedy and the history of tragedy, then this book is for you. Kaufmann traces it from the ancient Greeks to the modern age. He discusses the different paradigms and literary theory of philosophers down the ages. In short, this book details everything you ever wanted to know about the genre - and then some!

Birth of tragedy, death of tragedy
By John C. Landon
Finding this book on ... search engine was a pleasant surprise, the book now in paperback. There are not many good books, apart from literary criticism of individual works, attempting to analyze the phenomenon of tragedy, whose very definition is subject to an almost metaphysical confusion. Kaufmann's work is especially significant since, as the translator and commentator of Nietzsche's famous work, he also provides a corrective to the inspired but misleading views of that brilliant thinker. The view of tragedy emerging from some preposterous cult or ritual of the goat, and like theories, have been laid to rest by recent scholarship, which Kaufmann cites. The question of the birth and death of tragedy is great historical riddle and defies easy analysis, as is the attempt to find the common denominator between its short list of examplars. The great age of the Greek tragedians is subject to many misperceptions, such as among them the idea that Aeschylus, a bit of an optimist, invented the tragic view of life, etc... Nietzsche's attempt to blame Euripides for the 'death of tragedy' is shown to be somewhat misleading, while the reaction of Plato and the birth of philosophy in its wake remains a forever ambiguous advance.
Kaufmann's 'steady as she goes' scholarship assembles a host of interesting issues and digressions, from the Poetics of Aristotle to the great interpretation of tragedy by Hegel, based on Antigone. Kaufmann's ironic view of philosophy, born in the same time and litter as the genre of the tragedians, is an additional twist, with a somewhat acerbic conclusion that should put philosophers to a double take. Finally, the strange inability of modern drama to grasp the essentials, let alone continue this tradition, throws a great question mark on the universal history from which tragedy is born, and the mechanical history during which it cannot survive. The work might be complemented by George Steiner's The Death of Tragedy.

Kaufmann makes the philosophy of tragedy accessible
By Stephanie L. Wilde
Walter Kaufmann has a wonderful prose style-lucid, pithy, and even witty. Consequently, this book will be a pleasant and enlightening read even if you are only minimally familiar with the dramatists and philosophers that Kaufmann brings together in this work.

Kaufmann starts from the basic premise that to know what tragedy is one must examine the tragedies themselves. Any theory that can not account for all of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripedes & Shakespeare's tragedies is not sound-and he appears to be the first to really hold the theories of Plato, Socrates, Neitzsche, Hegel and other philosophers to this standard. But Kaufmann is not merely a nay-sayer; in the process he develops his own theory. (It's soundness you must judge for yourself!)

I would recommend that the prospective reader have a little familiarity with Greek and Shakespearian tragedy-ideally Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Antigone, Aeschylus' The Oresteia, and two or three of Shakespeare's tragedies. One of Kaufmann's key points is that the plot and characterization of tragedy takes many forms, and it will help if you can reflect on this yourself, instead of having to take him at his word. A background in aesthetic philosophy is quite unnecessary. However much you go into this book with, I think you will come out eager to read more.
