About the Author
Ryuho Okawa, founder Happy Science, Kofuku-no-Kagaku in Japanese, has devoted his life to the exploration of the Truth and ways to happiness. He was born in 1956 in Tokushima, Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo. In March 1981, he received his higher calling and awakened to the hidden part of his consciousness, El Cantare. After working a major Tokyo-based trading house and studying international finance at the Graduate Center of the University of New York, he established the Institute in 1986. Since then, he has been designing spiritual workshops for people from all walks of life, from teenagers to business executives. He is known for his wisdom, compassion, and commitment to educating people to think and act in spiritual and religious ways. He has published over 300 books, including The Essence of Buddha, which have sold millions of copies worldwide. He has also produced successful feature length films (including animations) based on his works. The members of the Institute follow the path he teaches, ministering to people who need help by sharing his teachings.

Improve quality of life by developing a steady mind

This book is a good, informative read for people seeking some inner peace and stability in life. Mr. Okawa's practical advice on what kind of mental attitude and personality we should strive to develop, and some suggestions on how to develop this kind of thinking are invaluable. This is not some esoteric Buddhist text but rather simple common sense for a better quality of life. Highly practical and effective, I would recommend it to anyone.

It has good information. Not bulky, easy reading. However, I believe there must be other books that offer a little more understanding on the subject. My suggestion: check your local library and see if you can either find it or find other options before you spend your money.

A good read for any age in life. I hope that more people read this book to stretch their mind in a positive way, to allow them to handle life's difficulties with ease. Although, please be advised that life is what you make it; and with that, hard work is always needed in order to create the life you want. This book gives you the insight and advice needed for the journey between point A (start) and B (finish).

For the past 25 years, Steven Rosen has been both a devout vegetarian and an eloquent advocate of the vegetarian ideal. His articles and books have appeared in several languages and he is a frequent contributor to such publications as Vegetarian Times, The Minaret and Back to Godhead. Steve is a freelance writer and author of 11 books.

I agree with premise, but some faulty research

Several years ago, I read the original version, when it was titled _Food for the Spirit_. I recently picked up this, the current version. There is a new transcript of a radio interview with the auther. Not much else seems different. Possibly some small revisions were made elsewhere in the book, but it is not a substantal revision. I had hoped that the author would have revised more of the material.
Basically, I agree with the premise, that modern treatment of animals cannot be justified by any system of morality. Unfortunatly, some of the author's research was faulty. He relies too much on extra-biblical works of very questionable validity. For Christianity, the author spends an inordinate amount of time discussing "The Gospel of the Holy Twelve" which has about zero evidence for its being genuine. To someone who is not already convinced to be in favor of vegetarianism would suspect that if the author needs to spend so much time on disreputable sources then he can't have a very good case.
Likewise, for Buddhism, much of the pro-vegetarian sutra is not considered to be genuine.
A better tact for the author to have taken might have been to address more how modern inventions such as the factory farm are far different than historical animal husbandry. For Christians, I'd recommend _Is God a Vegetarian?_ The author of that book concludes that Jesus was NOT vegetarian, but Jesus didn't live today either.
For Jews, I'd recommend, _Judaism and Vegetarianism_. Both of these are available here at amazon.com.
Don't get me wrong, there is some good stuff here. But it seems that in an effort to prove his point, the author did not always use due-diligence to verify all the information, and as such weakens his case substantially.

Very enlightening

This book is very well written and researched and I liked Ms. Hislop's factual style of writing. Not far into the book it suddenly struck me as odd that there is so much effort in understanding female sex offenders, but I do not see this same attempt at understanding male offenders ... they just go straight to prison. Is it not possible that they may also be suffering from some childhood trauma done to them or are in other ways in great need of psychological help. Maybe someone could write a book about that.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I feel that this is a well written and very well researched book. It shows a lot of insight into a very newly researched field of psychology as well as a practical approach for helping professionals to aid and understand the victums.

I found this book to be very well researched, and thorough. I believe that his contains new information that is helpful to helping both victims and offenders. It is a shame that more people in positions that deal with victims or offenders have not read this book.

This text provides an introduction to the numerical solution of initial and boundary value problems in ordinary differential equations on a firm theoretical basis. This book strictly presents numerical analysis as a part of the more general field of scientific computing. Important algorithmic concepts are explained down to questions of software implementation. For initial value problems, a dynamical systems approach is used to develop Runge-Kutta, extrapolation, and multistep methods. For boundary value problems including optimal control problems, both multiple shooting and collocation methods are worked out in detail.
Graduate students and researchers in mathematics, computer science, and engineering will find this book useful. Chapter summaries, detailed illustrations, and exercises are contained throughout the book with many interesting applications taken from a rich variety of areas.
Peter Deuflhard is founder and president of the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and full professor of scientific computing at the Free University of Berlin, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
