Buy this book first!
By Fuzzy
I purchased 4 books on studio building. This is by far the best book for in home studio information. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to build a home studio. Most of the other books were techno babble and were too in depth. they will come in handy later. This book really tells the hows and whys about designing your studio. It also tells you how and where to save costs. One of the best things about this book is it tells you what won't work and why. I found that priceless.

Best book of its kind
By wmcq
I have at least two other 'build your own home studio" books in my collection but this one is the best so far. It is a very practical approach to solving the numerous problems one encounters in building a decent sounding room. It has very clear instructions on building and installing a variety of room treatments and the included DVD brings these instructions to life.

Book one of NEPHILIM CODE series

Nephilim walk among us. Descendants of Angels who just want to live their lives without humans knowing they exist. Some of them anyway. Then there are the ones who want to rule over us. Like in the days of old, they want to be considered our ‘gods’.

My name is Nova Quinn. I’m a photographer…and human.
Well, I was.

Now I’m fighting for my life. I wasn’t supposed to survive, but I did. Caught in a world where ‘superhuman’ abilities are normal, it’s hard enough trying to get a grip on this new reality. But when the other side shows up and wants to use my genetics for their experiments, suddenly it’s no longer enough to know Nephilim exist – I have to be one.

My name is Nova Quinn.
And I’m the created Nephilim.

A great new addition to the angel/nephilim genre. Plus Nova is a butt kicker!
By Kelly Maldia
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

I do have a thing for urban fantasy books with angels. So when this book came up for review, I raised my hand to read it. I’m glad I did.

Nova is a human. Or should I say was a human. Out of a chance of fate, she was changed into nephilim, a being of angel and human descent. With the help from Ben, Zeph, Ransom, and other nephilim, they are trying to help her figure out how and why she is changing. What she doesn’t know is that there is another group of nephilim, Ibira Corp, who wants to study her to find out why she was able to be changed. Now she’s in a struggle for her life and freedom.

The story has a little sci-fi twist with genetics. While I normally suspend reality in urban fantasy/paranormal stories, the genetics gave it plausibility to it. The story was action packed. Plus we have nephilim with abilities! No two abilities are alike. We meet some interesting characters. There are people who can cure illness, take pain away, freeze you, fly, and be able to control you with their voice. There are many more, both interesting and terrifying. It had an X-men vibe to it. Nova was a great character. She is strong, smart and sassy. She’s a fighter. While the book did have some romance in it, it was light side. Ben is swoon worthy guy. His abilities have caused him to distance himself from others. Nova does an incredible job acquiring his trust and being patient for him.

Overall, the book is solid. It’s a new take on the angel genre. The end has a little cliff hanger, and the version I read had a sneak peek of the next book, Nephilim Code- Edward. I couldn’t help myself and had to read it. I will be signing up for updates for this series as well as pre-order the next book when available.

A great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance
By 2BBNB
Nova Quinn is a smart, sassy, fearless young woman with her eye constantly searching for the perfect shot to be photographed. One night on the roof of her apartment, minding her own business with her camera in hand, she hears a disturbance and starts taking pictures. No way did she just see two men fly up into the air...What the heck just happened, and why is her strange but handsome new neighbor one of them that disappeared like a shot into the night sky?

Ever curious Nova sets out to meet her new neighbors to get answers. When a chance introduction with her roommate's new love interest makes her sick, only the new neighbors can help Nova deal with what is happening to her.

Zeph and Ben Angelis are brothers and Nephilim. Only other Nephilim can see each other's powers and abilities so why is it that Nova can see what they are? As in any society there are good and evil, having a human see what they are makes Nova dangerous and wanted. Her human side is dying and now they need to get to the bottom of what her new powers may be.

First off, we love stories involving Angels/Nephilim etc. Nova did not disappoint. There is a great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance brewing through this easy to read and follow story. Nova is strong and fearless, Zeph and Ben (even Julius) are dreamy while each dealing with their powers differently. Every character we meet are well written and described without being overloaded with dialogue. We are super excited to continue this journey and pick up Book 2: Edward, when it is available. 4.5 Sighs

Cliffhanger
By Charrlie
The story was good and I would give it a better rating but I have a few issues. It needs an editor, my grammar is not that great and even I picked up on this. I had no idea what country it was set in other than it was not the US until the very end when you find out she is returning to Melbourn. I think books that end in cliffhangers should have advanced warning. It is a cheap sales gimmic and I have no respect for authors who do this.

Refreshing take on an alpha billionaire.
By VeeReads
I just downloaded and read this book in one morning, and I'm disappointed. Not by the storyline, or the authors skills at pulling me, nor the word use... I'm disappointed it's over!! As usual I downloaded the story based on the perception it would be another bossy billionaire story with lots of predictable outcomes and ups and downs. Not the case! I actually suspected different outcomes for a majority of the book and I LOVED that it wasn't predictable but still just as read worthy. Great job! For that reason I won't share anything about the storyline but I will say this. The characters are real, the hero appealing and strong but not force fed Alpha, and the women all strong and independent even when leaning on friends. I enjoyed this read and definitely won't forget ;)

This book has a fantastic twist and I was absolutely along for the ride
By Itsy Bitsy Book Bits
This book has a fantastic twist and I was absolutely along for the ride.
Preslee is a young woman on a mission to make her life better, after growing up in an awful situation and a dad that is MIA. She has to make tough life choices at a young age. She saved every penny she can so, she could move out after graduation and never look back. She is a collage student, working to get a degree in Forensic Science, hoping to one day work for the FBI.
" When I'd wanted to escape from my mother's jibs and criticisms, I'd flip on the TV and get lost in the mysteries that threaded through countless crime shows."  "It was more than the bissful escape from reality that took over when I watched these shows. It was the concept of justice that I'd always loved."
Preslee's mom is a vicious drunkin woman, who blames Preslee for all of her woes.
Her best friend Ava who also grew up in a bad situation saved up and moved out of her home when she was 16.
One night on her way home from a class on Friday nights, she decided to take a detour to the local all night supermarket. That night she was in a devestating car accident, that stole her memory.
Kris is a young man who takes an intrest in Preslee after seeing her outside of an attorney's office. He simply could not walk away from her and asks her to coffee and to hear her story. She was the girl in an accident and then in a coma for four months.
After the coffee shop hour long conversation he asks her on a date and she agrees.
With a great date and genuine attraction to Preslee the next morning he decides to help her and begins to look into her open case. It looks like the police are getting nowhere and he believes that Preslee deserves justice for what has happend and help with all the bills that are piling up.
"I needed to protect her. She looked up at me and I'd been lost. Kissing her felt natural and inevitable, compelled to taste her, to hold her"
This is where the story gets sticky. With a great plot twist and two people who seem made for each other this romance is worth the read.

Poachers: Stories, by Tom Franklin

In ten stunning and bleak tales set in the woodlands, swamps and chemical plants along the Alabama River, Tom Franklin stakes his claim as a fresh, original Southern voice. His lyric, deceptively simple prose conjures a world where the default setting is violence, a world of hunting and fishing, gambling and losing, drinking and poaching-a world most of us have never seen. In the chilling title novella (selected for the anthologies New Stories from the South: The Year's Best, 1999 and Best Mystery Stories of the Century), three wild boys confront a mythic game warden as mysterious and deadly as the river they haunt. And, as a weathered, hand-painted sign reads: "Jesus is not coming." This terrain isn't pretty, isn't for the weak of heart, but in these deperate, lost people, Franklin somehow finds the moments of grace that make them what they so abundantly are: human.

Amazon.com Review
Penzler Pick, December 1999: As the editor of an annual series for Houghton Mifflin titled Best American Mystery Stories, I read scores, if not hundreds, of little magazines in search of the best crime fiction published that year. One story that came to light from the Texas Review was "Poachers" by Tom Franklin, which I thought was easily the most original and memorable tale of 1998. It went on to win the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America and became the title of Franklin's first book, a short story collection of such distinction that it has already provided a shoo-in for spring 2000s Best American Mystery Stories of the Century.

"Poachers" is no ordinary tale of detection but rather a mood piece that will remind the reader of the best of James Lee Burke. Set in the swamps of the deep South, it is a riveting tale of three brothers who are so violent and amoral that they will kill anyone or anything in their path. One of their victims is a young lawman who was much loved, causing the locals to bring in their own hired gun, a game warden of legendary skill as a hunter of poachers. One by one, he tracks down the crazed brothers in a quest for justice.

The other stories in this beautifully produced little volume are also superb. While there is occasional humor, this is not a collection to read if you're in the mood for P.G. Wodehouse or Dave Barry. The dark woods and hollows and the unforgiving swamps and their inhabitants do not make for a sunshiny reading experience. As the old wooden sign in Poachers announces, "Jesus Is Not Coming." Franklin's first novel will be published in 2000 and I, for one, can't wait. --Otto Penzler

From Publishers Weekly
These 10 honestly crafted and carefully executed tales of cottonmouths and skulking outlaws in the South unflinchingly explore the pitfalls and dangers involved in making one's place in the world. The collection's power arises from Franklin's reluctance to analyze its (often bloody) events. In "Dinosaurs," a waste inspector takes a huge stuffed rhinoceros as a reward for not closing down a gas station with several hazardous leaky pumps. In "Grit," a devious laborer at a minerals processing plant trades positions with his supervisor through blackmail involving gambling debts, only to see the scam backfire. The protagonist of "Triathlon," a man trapped in a decaying marriage, remembers fishing for sharks on the night before his wedding. Fantasy has its place, too, as in "Alaska," in which a rambling male voice describes an imagined trip to the Northwest that never gets farther than the shores of a pond in some unspecified Southern location; although little happens, the story's dreamy meandering is seductive. In "The Ballad of Duane Juarez," a man commits small crimes without guilt because he has given himself a fake name, and thereby a fake identity. The other stories in the book, however, only provide a tantalizing buildup to the chilling title story, in which a legendary and demonic game warden in a small Alabama town stealthily and privately punishes three youths who have murdered his predecessor. Franklin announces the arrival of the avenger with a sentence no more complete than "A match striking," and yet this is enough for a good scare. While he may occasionally wax sentimental about life in the impoverished South, Franklin's style is often as laconic and simply spoken as his characters' dialogue, sometimes close to Hemingway, but more often akin to Denis Johnson or Raymond Carver in its resonant ordinariness. Although some readers may balk at the virtual absence of women from these intensely masculine yarns, those who persist will be persuaded by their gruff grace. (June)

From Kirkus Reviews
Ten rewarding, workhorse stories, all set in the backwoods country of southern Alabama. Newcomer Franklin seems the sort of southerner who might consider Montgomery the Big City and look upon Arkansans as Yankees. City slickers approaching his work may be reminded at first of Tobacco Road, but most of his characters are from small towns rather than small farmsthough theyre about as poor and just as desperate. Glen, the plant manager of Grit, is in charge of a dying factory owned by a couple of northern idiots who dont visit the premises more than once or twice a year. Badly in debt to one of his employees (a bookie), Glen becomes involved in an increasingly desperate extortion racket. The narrator of Shubuta lives in a dying town where lovesick men buy ammunition whenever their girls leave them. The narrators uncle, who suffered a pretty miserable marriage himself, is now slowly dying in the hospital, and the narrator is trying to figure out what to do about his own unfaithful girlfriend. In Triathlon, a group of friends who met at the Chicago Marathon go to a bachelor party even as their own marriages are disintegrating, and in The Ballad of Duane Juarez, a rich real-estate broker asks his divorced and unemployed brother to come to his house while hes on vacation and kill his girlfriends cats. The title story concerns a doomed family of three brotherssons of a father who committed suicidewho make their living hunting illegal game and kill a warden when he confronts them over it. Dark and evocative, its the most atmospheric and best-developed piece here. Refreshingly gritty and unpretentious: stories that manage to open the door on whatfor most readersremains a previously unknown world. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The love child of Flannery O'Connor and Harry Crews
By Randall Ivey
Like O'Connor, Franklin has a perfect ear for Southern speech and uses it to hilarious and incisive results. Unlike O'Connor, his characters are doomed with nary a chance for redemption. Here he resembles Crews more, with characters at the end of their tethers, drowning their nihilism in sex, materialism, and booze, lots and lots of booze. In some cases they crave escape to somewhere better or different (like Alaska); in most cases they just don't give a damn. "The Ballad of Duane Juarez" seems most illustrative of this tendency; it is a terrifying tale in which the narrator gives in to the most primitive, scrounging impulses.
Other influences are apparent here, some non-Southern. One can see the presence of Cormac McCarthy, for instance, and his deliberate, blunt, unsentimental prose, or, inevitably, Hemingway's unmistakable minimalism. There is no magnolia-scented prose here; that would imply nobility and hope. Other reviewers have criticized Franklin because his stories often seem lopped off with their abrupt endings. I must admit that bothered me some too, until I realized that a nice, tidy, satisfying ending would be completely out of character with these Franklin's folk. Their restlessness and hopelessness end only when they die.
The celebrated title story impresses most, with its classic theme of survival and its combination of terror and pity. "Grit" comes in second, with its protagonist sucked into a scam and the charms of an exotic woman.
If you're looking for a happy ending, stay far, far away from this collection. If you want a glimpse into the desperate, funny, pathetic, hopeful, hopeless lives SOME white Southerners lead, proceed with caution.

Southern noir at its best
By Peggy Vincent
A collection of stories, all of which have a heart of darkness. We're talking plot, suspense, character - and alligators. Not for the faint of heart. Nothing charming or frothy here; just riveting tales of violence, drunkenness, death, craziness, and obsession. Superb - only don't read it right before falling asleep.

Satisfying snack, but now I want more
By A Customer
Poachers is like an exotic nine-course meal. At first you're a little apprehensive and you're not sure you're going to like it. But with each new, unidentifiable dish you become more and more satiated and finally gorge yourself in delight. The final title story is definitely the dessert. Delicious, it hits you right in the gut. This book explores a world I'll never know first-hand, and I'm glad Tom Franklin explored it in my stead. I'm smacking my lips in anticipation of his next book, which apparently will be a novel set in the 1890s.

For courses in human development, theories of development and development over the lifespan.

Throughout years of teaching various courses in psychology, Doris Bergen struggled with a familiar problem in Human Development classes: the texts available to her did not meet the needs of the types of students in her classes. In teaching students who were primarily working towards degrees in professional practice, rather than those focusing on advanced degrees in psychology, the current texts did not present theoretical work in a way that helped her students translate the concepts into their careers. Here, Doris Bergen has authored a text that does just that. By making the theoretical issues relevant and accessible to students going into professional practice, enabling them to apply theory to case examples, and helping them see which theories are focused primarily on specific developmental domains, this text will give students the edge they need as they move forward in their working lives.

Quite a poor textbook.
By Noose
I have to qualify my review by saying I was required to purchase this text for a doctoral level human development class. My review reflects how well this text fills that role with some specific examples. In short, this is a terrible graduate text book because it is too simplistic and lacks in-depth discussion and supporting research.

This was probably written for undergraduate classes, which I say because it basically says nothing you couldn't pick up off Wikipedia and the internet in general. It very simplistically describes the various developmental theories and provides almost no examples of research studies to highlight conclusions or support of the theories. On the other hand, it is an "easy" read. By easy, I mean there is almost no knowledge in it to burden oneself too greatly. In fact, only HALF the book is dedicated to delivery of knowledge in traditional textbook form (that is, statement of research findings and summarization into a coherent whole, organized thematically) and the rest is dedicated to "Readings," which should, if this were a decent textbook, be summarized by the author and integrated into the chapters. If the author wanted to highlight these as particularly important, she should have ONLY listed the citations at the end of the chapter under a "Further Reading" section and left it at that, and spent the rest of the text actually talking about something. I did not purchase a teaser book, I bought a text book. Reading it made me feel like I was in Starship Troopers, bombarded by those annoying news programs: "Would you like to know more?"

What's worse is that despite the simplicity of the text, the explanations for some topics left me BEGGING for more explication. For example, some of Piaget's ideas about decalage could absolutely use examples of research studies demonstrating WHAT THE HECK IT IS, because based on this text alone I could never figure it out and had to consult numerous online sources to find clear examples. "But Andrew," you say, "you're in a doctoral program, you should love to find this stuff out on your own!" NO, that's why I was supposed to buy this stupid textbook! Making the reader more confused is the exact opposite of what a textbook is supposed to do.

In total, this book has ~25 pages worth of citations for all the chapters. Let us compare this to the social psychology textbook used two semesters previous for the same doctoral program: ~106 pages with SMALLER WRITING. This difference screams that this text delivers very little information. It was never meant for a doctoral class that, in comparison with the other classes in the program, should be feeding knowledge into me at such a furious rate that I crap in Eriksonian stages.

Finally, the author has some absurd axe to grind about the role of women in developmental psychology. Seriously, I don't need the cutesy stories about how this husband and this wife tag-teamed some kids to figure out how they developed cognitively. If the author did a proper job, then I wouldn't even know the theorists first names, and therefore would have no indication at all whether they were a male or female or transgender or whatever, because all the author should be doing is delivering the theories and supporting research, all while citing the authors by their last names and dates only. If I were studying to be a developmental psychologist maybe I would care, but I am not.

Some might complain that what I am advocating is "dry." Yes, it is dry, because academic reading full of knowledge tends to be dry. Because it's not a freaking beach book, it's a text book. Learning too hard for you? Too bad, you shouldn't have applied for a doctoral program.

All in all, I found this textbook to be a severe disappointment, and it in fact generally made the learning process more difficult because of how sparse it is. Do not recommend one bit.

All around great theories
By Diana V
This text book was used for a psychology and human development graduate class. It was a wonderful book that was an easy read. It included both linear and non-linear theories. It was interesting, though some of the readings at the back of the book were on the dry side.

Good enough
By NYNM
I assign this for my classes. Its not great but its adequate, and fairly affordable. I didn't want one of those bulky texts that are filled with research references and citations, I wanted my students to have something more based on theories and concepts than an enormous collection of facts. Bergen is not ideal but it works.

Economic Geographies of Globalisation: A Short Introduction, by Martin Sokol

'This introductory text is about economic geography and globalization in all their different stripes and colours. It introduces clearly the subject matters in economic geography through a wide range of important conceptual lenses and theoretical perspectives. It does so without a facts-based rendition of what globalization actually is. Instead, Sokol offers a refreshingly light touch on the various approaches in understanding contemporary economic geographies and applies these conceptual insights, in a helpful and straightforward manner, to our appreciation of such key challenges of globalization as inequality, instability, and uneven development. It is both wide in coverage and contemporary in relevance. The text will be well adopted in courses on economic geography, global studies, development studies, and international political economy.'
- Henry Yeung, National University of Singapore

This well-researched book provides a concise contribution to a large-scale debate on economic globalization.

Martin Sokol introduces key theoretical approaches that help us to understand how economies work, why they suffer recessions and crises, and why economic inequalities at various levels are growing in the context of globalization. He introduces key economic geography concepts and theories, demonstrating their application to our contemporary globalizing world. The role that economic geography may play in informing policy making is highlighted, and debates surrounding the recent global financial and economic crisis are expounded.

This highly accessible book will prove an essential reference tool for academics, students and researchers focusing on geography, economics, planning and regional development, development studies, international politics and international business. Policy makers and practitioners in local, regional and national authorities, international bodies and non-governmental organizations will also find this book to be an invaluable resource.

Review
Telling it like it is in a direct and engaging style, this is a book without preconceptions. It is a vital intervention that makes sense of the sorry state of the contemporary global economy and its formative geographies and shows what is involved in constructing an alternative. --Roger Lee, Queen Mary University of London, UK

[T]his is a very well written book, which not only rehearses arguments made in previous textbooks, but in the context of the ongoing economic crisis, it introduces new themes which have been absent in other books. Especially, its treatment about the importance about the importance of money and finance and how they shape economic geographies, not only in the context of the financial crisis, is what makes Economic Geographies of Globalisation distinctive compared with other textbooks. . . In short, the book informs new geography students and at the same time reminds more advanced geographers about what economic geography is about today and why it is such a vital discipline in understanding the workings and logics of a globalising world economy. --Tim Heinemann, Journal of Economic Geography

. . . provides a good overview of the issues in economic geography both in terms of theory and applications. This is a good book for starters, who want to find a direction within economic geography, and are looking for a book that provides a brief, but interesting, outlook of the main topics investigated in economic geography. --VĂtor Braga, Economic Geography Research Group

This 230-page book features over 300 figure drawings and quick poses from the live model. Individual chapters highlight topics such as Foreshortening, Light & Shadow, Heads, Drapery, and more, with a stimulating foreword by flourishing artist, Mary Sauer. The Quick Pose includes tips and instructions on making quick decisions while drawing and identifying landmarks to help pinpoint such things as Weight & Balance and Symmetry. These ultimately aid in carrying out speedy, yet beautifully precise gesture drawings. There is great stress on confident line work throughout the book and on the necessity of being committed. Typical class procedures and model setups are also discussed. The artist’s thoughts on figure drawing are presented along with her push towards the importance of getting an accurate feel of the pose rather than a photographic copy of it. Erin writes about how drawing is relatable to life and contemplates on how to achieve that all-elusive balance in getting both an accurate yet intuitive drawing.

A guide to gesture drawing
By William Whitaker
Gesture drawing is basic training for those entering the visual arts. For many decades now, freshman art students armed with charcoal and pads of newsprint have been faced with the challenging and often bewildering task of laying down quick drawings of the human form. This book gives one a good idea of how it's done.
This is a great book to give junior high and high school students a head start.

A superior book on the subject.
By J. King
An outstanding treatise on the subject of gesture drawing (sometimes called quick sketch). I offer that I've been a student of the human figure for twenty years, and have taught adult education classes on the subject, myself. The content of this book mirrors my own thinking and drawing habits. If one takes the information presented in this book to heart, one will progress far. The writing is consice and informative and the many drawings are authoritative and a delight to behold. A book well worth the price. Thanks to the artist-author for creating it.
