Human Development: Traditional and Contemporary Theories, by Doris Bergen

For courses in human development, theories of development and development over the lifespan.

Throughout years of teaching various courses in psychology, Doris Bergen struggled with a familiar problem in Human Development classes: the texts available to her did not meet the needs of the types of students in her classes. In teaching students who were primarily working towards degrees in professional practice, rather than those focusing on advanced degrees in psychology, the current texts did not present theoretical work in a way that helped her students translate the concepts into their careers. Here, Doris Bergen has authored a text that does just that. By making the theoretical issues relevant and accessible to students going into professional practice, enabling them to apply theory to case examples, and helping them see which theories are focused primarily on specific developmental domains, this text will give students the edge they need as they move forward in their working lives.

Quite a poor textbook.
By Noose
I have to qualify my review by saying I was required to purchase this text for a doctoral level human development class. My review reflects how well this text fills that role with some specific examples. In short, this is a terrible graduate text book because it is too simplistic and lacks in-depth discussion and supporting research.

This was probably written for undergraduate classes, which I say because it basically says nothing you couldn't pick up off Wikipedia and the internet in general. It very simplistically describes the various developmental theories and provides almost no examples of research studies to highlight conclusions or support of the theories. On the other hand, it is an "easy" read. By easy, I mean there is almost no knowledge in it to burden oneself too greatly. In fact, only HALF the book is dedicated to delivery of knowledge in traditional textbook form (that is, statement of research findings and summarization into a coherent whole, organized thematically) and the rest is dedicated to "Readings," which should, if this were a decent textbook, be summarized by the author and integrated into the chapters. If the author wanted to highlight these as particularly important, she should have ONLY listed the citations at the end of the chapter under a "Further Reading" section and left it at that, and spent the rest of the text actually talking about something. I did not purchase a teaser book, I bought a text book. Reading it made me feel like I was in Starship Troopers, bombarded by those annoying news programs: "Would you like to know more?"

What's worse is that despite the simplicity of the text, the explanations for some topics left me BEGGING for more explication. For example, some of Piaget's ideas about decalage could absolutely use examples of research studies demonstrating WHAT THE HECK IT IS, because based on this text alone I could never figure it out and had to consult numerous online sources to find clear examples. "But Andrew," you say, "you're in a doctoral program, you should love to find this stuff out on your own!" NO, that's why I was supposed to buy this stupid textbook! Making the reader more confused is the exact opposite of what a textbook is supposed to do.

In total, this book has ~25 pages worth of citations for all the chapters. Let us compare this to the social psychology textbook used two semesters previous for the same doctoral program: ~106 pages with SMALLER WRITING. This difference screams that this text delivers very little information. It was never meant for a doctoral class that, in comparison with the other classes in the program, should be feeding knowledge into me at such a furious rate that I crap in Eriksonian stages.

Finally, the author has some absurd axe to grind about the role of women in developmental psychology. Seriously, I don't need the cutesy stories about how this husband and this wife tag-teamed some kids to figure out how they developed cognitively. If the author did a proper job, then I wouldn't even know the theorists first names, and therefore would have no indication at all whether they were a male or female or transgender or whatever, because all the author should be doing is delivering the theories and supporting research, all while citing the authors by their last names and dates only. If I were studying to be a developmental psychologist maybe I would care, but I am not.

Some might complain that what I am advocating is "dry." Yes, it is dry, because academic reading full of knowledge tends to be dry. Because it's not a freaking beach book, it's a text book. Learning too hard for you? Too bad, you shouldn't have applied for a doctoral program.

All in all, I found this textbook to be a severe disappointment, and it in fact generally made the learning process more difficult because of how sparse it is. Do not recommend one bit.

All around great theories
By Diana V
This text book was used for a psychology and human development graduate class. It was a wonderful book that was an easy read. It included both linear and non-linear theories. It was interesting, though some of the readings at the back of the book were on the dry side.

Good enough
By NYNM
I assign this for my classes. Its not great but its adequate, and fairly affordable. I didn't want one of those bulky texts that are filled with research references and citations, I wanted my students to have something more based on theories and concepts than an enormous collection of facts. Bergen is not ideal but it works.
