About the Author
My Qualifications as a Writer by Othniel J. Seiden, MD. Do I have an excellent background in college English, Literature and Creative Writing? No! Am I a whiz at grammar? No! I doubt I ever earned better than a C in any English course I ever took in grade, high school or college, nor did I ever have much interest in literature or creative writing courses that I was forced to take. I certainly wouldn't have taken them as an elective. Now please understand, I m not bragging that I was a poor student. What I want you to understand is that if you really want to write a book, you can publish it and you can get it sold. I ve been able to have over 20 books published in spite any perceived scholarly deficit.

Worth It... And Then Some
By Amazon Customer
Ottie offered a two day / eight hour class through a continuing education program in Denver that did little more than regurgitate his book for the people that didn't bother to read it before the class. That's not a criticism- His book was great, and some of the things I learned were so contrary to what I had learned about publishing that it was good to hear it in person.
This book quickly and simply opens your eyes to all of the different ways to get published, and then helps you figure out what is best for you.
Since reading his book I was able to find a publisher and I'm meeting with a cover designer. Most importantly, because of what Ottie taught me, I retain the final decisions relating to the title and to the cover design which I think will help me sell more books.
I've researched a lot, but it seems a lot of 1st time authors are starting to figure out that commercial publishers do not care about them. So, they end up out on the road promoting their work alone with zero help from a publisher that took them 18 months to get to market with a 10% profit (if they are lucky).
I'll try to get back to you with updates as I go down this road, but I've been EXTREMELY happy that I have a much higher profit potential and that my publisher can get me to print while my book is relevant.

Original ideas in a short, easy to read book
By Christine Rice
"So, You Want to Write a Book" by Othniel Seiden is a refreshing read with a positive outlook on writing and publishing a book.
The book starts with a few chapters about how and why it's not that difficult to traditionally publish, the author's qualifications, and "who should read this book." There are a few chapters on book ideas, which tell the reader how to come up with a book idea and how to determine if it's marketable. The author goes over querying, speaking with editors, and press releases. He discusses time management, writer's block, and the writing process - from 1st draft to publication.
Next, Seiden reviews the different methods of publishing. He personally prefers traditional publishing and what he calls "partner publishing," which is what ebook and print-on-demand publishing is like today. He also goes over vanity publishing and self-publishing from the stance of using a printing press. He also discusses agents, contracts, marketing, promotion, and the media.
"So, You Want to Write a Book" is a fun, quick read. The author has a unique perspective on writing and publishing - some insightful ideas I hadn't considered. The text is broken up with quotes, references, and bold subtitles, and the chapters are refreshingly short. There is a lot of helpful information in this book.
I recommend "So, You Want to Write a Book" to all writers who are nervous to begin writing their first book, because they don't know what to expect. This book will ease their fears and give them helpful advice and ideas. It's also a book for writers at any stage, like myself, who has self-published three books, but still found the book enlightening and informational.

mixed bag of advice
By Ande
This book to me was a mixed bag of advice. Some very good, some 'duh' advice, and some I could have read a novel on the subject and not needed. The 'puke it out' analogy is a valid one and certainly a point that bears repeating for young writers who get side tracked, but some of the advice for publishing is so contrary to what publishers are asking for that I am hesitant to consider the advice. In an industry that seems very steeped in following directions the call, call, call advice threw me a bit. Overall, I'm glad to have read it, but would not count it among the top guides I have read or have on hand.
