This dictionary by Hall (Armstrong Atlantic State Univ.) is a concise, accessible reference book on Haiti beginning with Columbus's landfall on the island of Hispaniola in 1492 and ending with the election of Michel Martelly as president in 2011. The volume features over 400 alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced entries. A focus is on political leadership--a major concern, given the large number of Haitian presidents who were either killed or forced to resign after only brief periods in office. Hall's dictionary updates Roland Perusse's Historical Dictionary of Haiti (CH, Oct'77). And it is twice the size (295 pages versus Perusse's 124 pages), contains more entries, and offers a more extensive bibliography (16 pages versus Perusse's 8 pages). Like Perusse, Hall offers a useful chronology and a topical listing of books covering art, literature, education, public health, sports, entertainment, geography, archaeology, the Haitian diaspora, folklore, and economics. He also provides 18 Internet sources. Hall's dictionary is strongest for the 20th century. Treatment of religion and culture are not as thorough as treatment of politics. Nevertheless, this new dictionary constitutes the most extensive single-volume reference work available on Haiti. Valuable Research Tool

Done well, historical dictionaries are important tools for scholars, students, and others interested in a particular area of history. And Professor Hall's Historical Dictionary of Haiti does it right. The key is in the selection of entries. Michael Hall, a well-regarded Latin American historian with first-hand experience in Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic, has selected for this dictionary a collection of A-Z content that covers the breadth of Haitian historiography. A front-to-back read of the book provides a useful foundation of survey-level knowledge of Haiti. In addition, individual entries capture the essence of each topic. For instance, the "Diaspora" entry concisely yet compellingly illustrates how tragic events and circumstances that too often have dominated Haitian history have compelled the migration of its people to other nations. Throughout the book, individual topics, events, and people viewed through the historian's lens are communicated in ways that most-appropriately place them within the larger context of Haitian history. Professor Hall's work would be a welcome addition to the library of anyone looking for a comprehensive and readable survey of Haitian history.

Excellent reference & historical resource guide !

I have worked in the non-profit emergency response and humanitarian field for over 25 years (including Haiti) and have shared this historical dictionary with colleagues and peers in other organizations. And they do not want to give it back ! It is an excellent refernce guide for all things Haitian, especially for those that are new to Haiti culture, history and politics. It is a must read and a great window into understanding Haiti and it's significant history, culture and people.

As a b-school grad I liked that it wasn’t too dumbed down

Wow – what a story! This book really captures the drama from the inside out. As a b-school grad I liked that it wasn’t too dumbed down. It actually addresses the bigger picture of how leadership impacts employees and customers, who are at the heart of any business. Overall, it’s a great read for someone interested in business lessons with some juicy details thrown in!

Pleasing story

At first glance, this may be a bit of a parochial book that can be capable of giving interesting insights, as it looks at the remarkable story of how many workers of the Market Basket supermarket chain in New England, USA and members of the public rose up to save the company’s ousted CEO, a man who was well-liked and respected by perhaps a lot more than he realised.
A few senior executives resigned in protest and then something fairly amazing and unique happened: managers and workers walked out to hold a rally (in their own time) and the word spread and even customers joined in. The company bunkered down, suppliers and vendors start to freeze deliveries, politicians got involved and it started to become a national news story and media circus. All over one fairly loved and respected CEO.
It could have been a Hollywood movie – it may even be one day – yet the whole affair ended on a knife-edge with the company being sold to a consortium headed by the ousted executive. Oh, yes, to add more to the drama, it was a family battle too!
A collection of notes and references are to be found at the end of the book yet it would be been desirable to have had in-line references or footnotes: this would not have affected the book’s pace or style and it would have been a little more helpful for those who want to dig deeper into this fascinating story.
So in this small book the reader is treated to a drama, given an essay about human life and provided with a good overview about management dealings and the trials and tribulations of family companies – all wrapped up into an engaging read and something that may be an unexpected find.

last year and not only is my food shopping soul been saved but a good chunk of change as well

I live in metro Boston and every Sat. my Basket Buddy and I meet at the Burlington Market Basket to have coffee, chat and then shop. I converted to the Church of Artie T. last year and not only is my food shopping soul been saved but a good chunk of change as well. I watched all of the news casts last year. The book is good and should convert Bostonians and/or make those who live in the normal states of the USA envious. Today I went to the store where the "beautiful people" shop to buy a cup of coffee--that place where they celebrate diversity except if the diversity is not to their liking. This is the store that over charges people as a rule and frequently sells 10 ounces of produce but charges people for 16 ounces (yep, the food is not quite so whole). The guy in front of me spent $68 for one bag of food-- a not so whole bag of food. $68! By the way, the raised donuts at the Basket are the best. I am one American who does not run on Dunkin and prefer a cup of coffee at the Basket with their award winning (or should be) donut.

essential reading

This is a very detailed account of the ordination debate which is balanced, informed by all the current facts, and rooted in historical Christianity. Hauke's masterpiece is so extensive and detailed that it is actullay several books in one. Given the size and material of the book, $25.00 is a steal! While this book is NOT in favor of women's ordination, it is not a polemical tirade nor the all too often congratulatory backslapping and question-begging which accompanies too much of the literature on both sides. Rather, Hauke's book is balanced, fair, and very very well researced. I was going to attempt to write out the table of contents, but it would take too long. I decided to just give the headings. Part One I.The Question of the emancipation of women as a background to the theological debate. Detailed and Magisterial

German Catholic theologian Manfred Hauke has written a highly detailed look at the issues raised by those who seek the ordination of women in the Catholic Church. He concludes that such ordination is contrary to Scripture and Tradition. This book was written before the Pope's declaration in 1994 that the Church had no authority to ordain women. Hauke's work provides scholarly support for that papal declaration. The first half of the book gives extensive background on the philosophical and theological dimensions in different world religions of the masculine and the feminine. Only after setting forth this detailed background does Hauke give his detailed discussion of the Catholic view. In my opinion, his most significant insight concerns his exegesis of St. Paul's ban against women speaking in church in 1 Corinthians 14. Hauke concludes that this ban is aimed not at speaking in general during the liturgy, but at engaging in official public instruction during the liturgy. Hauke points out that Paul characterizes this ban as an authoritative "command of the Lord." Hauke reasonably infers that this ban on women engaging in formal instruction in the divine liturgy necessarily points to the non-ordination of women given that this type of public liturgical instruction is precisely a major function of the ordained.
Even more persuasive, in my view, is Hauke's analysis of those medieval theologians who focused on the Incarnation of Christ as a male as an underpinning for the ban on women's ordination. Hauke shows that the Tradition against women priests is, ultimately, not based on assumptions of inferiority or on some sort of patriarchal oppression, but rather is based on a deeply rooted and scriptural theology of complementarity which views the feminine as fundamentally receptive and the male as fundamentally transcendent. In my opinion, no supporter of women's ordination who fails to address and respond to Hauke's detailed scholarly study can be taken seriously.

Clear, Well Written and Beautiful

This is an amazing book in which the author addresses this question which seems to be on everyone's minds today revealing the philosophical, religious and scriptural explanations for an all-male priesthood. This is not done in some hoity-toity flippant way, as if this German priest had an agenda and made the "facts" fit that agenda, but in a brilliant examination of the symbolic meaning of men and women and several other considerations. I recommend this as the standard language from which we can all discuss the issue.

I'm a self taught musician, this book has been a great help.

Excellent, easy to grasp and well laid out. I am a bit of a savant and can play more than a half dozen instruments but I also have learning disabilities that make it hard at times to understand the usual way lessons are taught. This book helped me greatly to improve my flute playing ability.

Modern Guide to Fingerings for the Flute

The first thing you need to know about this fingering guide is that it is for the open hole, or french style flute, with a B foot. This guide is not for closed hole flutes, or flutes with a C foot. Though some of the fingerings will work for the C foot and closed-hole student flute, the strength of this book is its comprehensive treatment of the professional, open-hole, B foot instrument. If you have such an instrument, I recommend this book for its detailed discussion of many alternative fingerings and its treatment of the microtonal and multiphonic resources of the instrument. If you have a closed-hole flute you will be disappointed.

I have used this book in paper form in the past and it was fine. Unfortunately in the Kindle version the illustrations are far too small to be of any help.

In this sequel to his popular business/quality management book, Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success (1986), Imai offers a step forward?continuous improvement (kaizen) applied to the concept of continuous improvement in the workplace (gemba). The book reflects a definite operations bias. Indeed, Imai advocates the removal of all those peripheral things (muda) that cloud the focus of an organization. Some of the principles, such as the need for good housekeeping, seem simplistic, but Imai is on solid ground, demonstrating the practicality of gemba kaizen with a number of abbreviated case studies. The one weakness is the lack of adequate recognition of precedent setters: F.W. Taylor's Principles of Scientific Management (1912) and the work of W.A. Shewhart, W.E. Deming, J. Every manufacturing and service professional should read it.

Gemba is the place where value-adding activities take place. Decisive results can be achieved by focusing improvement activities in gemba. The author encourages managers and professionals to spend time in gemba to see what is happening and to encourage the front-line workers. General George S. Patton could easily be described as a gemba man: he encouraged officers to go to the scene of the action instead of trying to "lead" from a headquarters in the rear. He also recognized the role of the frontline worker (soldier) in achieving results. As a result, the troops under Patton's command won amazing and seemingly impossible victories. Companies that want to hold their market share and capture their competitors' must understand this lesson. (Imai does not discuss Patton, but the historical parallel is obvious.) My books "The Way of discuss General Carl von Clausewitz' "friction" in a workplace context. Friction includes seemingly minor inefficiencies and problems whose combined effects degrade the organization's performance. Imai uses the word "muda" (waste), and stresses the need to suppress it. Tom Peters says, "The accumulation of little items, each too 'trivial' to trouble the boss with, is a prime cause of miss-the-market delays." (from "Thriving on Chaos.") Muda is essentially the same thing as friction. Imai also mentions "muri" (strain), which arises from inadequate training, poor ergonomic design, and inadequate preventive maintenance. Muri is another form of friction. Imai also discusses tools like 5S-CANDO (CANDO = clearing up, arranging, neatness, discipline, and ongoing improvement). 5S-CANDO is another tool for reducing friction. Imai discusses Just-in-Time (JIT) as a tool for reducing inventory and improving product flow. Readers of Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox's "The Goal" will appreciate this section. Synchronous flow manufacturing (SFM) is treated in detail in "Leading the Way to Competitive Excellence: The Harris Mountaintop Case Study". The idea of JIT/SFM is to produce goods in response to customer demand, not to keep people and equipment busy. Imai discussess a mattress factory that uses this approach: it not only keeps inventory down, but it can offer far more product lines. This is a key tool for going after niche (small, specialized, customized) markets. William A. Levinson

Gemba -- Place where action happens

As a practitioner and instructor of lean and six sigma, I recommend this book a lot. Gemba is a vitally important concept that often gets overlooked or gets overshadowed by our data, especially in an increasingly e-driven world. Gemba Kaizen is especially useful for engineers and supervisors, who may not have extensive TPS experience, who need a practical guide for applying lean principals in their workplace. It has a nice glossary at the beginning. It has good sections on visual management (5S) and standard work. In addition to the 10 Rules for Gemba Kaizen, the following Imai quote is one of my favorites: "A lack of the five S's in gemba indicates inefficiency, muda, insufficient self-discipline, low moral, poor quality, high costs, and an inability to meet delivery terms."

Brief and to the Point

This is a delightful little book that provides important insights into how an organization can be successful by continuously looking at improving its operations, enhance efficiencies and refining operations. This would result in improved quality, productivity and ultimately profit for an organization but without the upheavals and pain associated with the likes of business process reengineering which is advocated by some people.

The author advocates the adoption of lean manufacturing principles, just-in-time processes, and Kanban, which should result in increased company profitability without adversely impacting employee morale and trust. The concepts highlighted in the book are well-known and the author consolidates these in a small book that makes easy and fast reading and a convenient reference guide for practitioners.

The book is recommended reading for managers involved in the implementation of lean manufacturing and Kaizen principles.

About the Author
Milica Z. Bookman earned a doctorate in economics and holds degrees from Brown University, London School of Economics, and Temple University. A professor at Saint Joseph’s University, she has published some dozen books including Economics in Film and Fiction, Medical Tourism in Developing Countries, and Tourists, Migrants and Refugees. Her books were named Choice’s Outstanding Book of the Year, her readings were aired on C-SPAN, and she is the recipient of the Tengelmann Award for Excellence in teaching and research.

Do They Take Credit Cards in Heaven is a very thought-provoking and compelling book. The uninformed may think economics a dry and boring subject.I say read Milica Z Bookman and you will discover how fascinating, comprehensible and deeply relevant this subject is to our lives - and deaths.

Unique and fascinating
By a reader from coconut grove
This is an excellently researched and written book that is difficult to categorize. It is a superb lesson in economics woven into the "magical thinking" about the after-life. It is surprising that a book covering such a serious scholarly subject can be so accessible. The book manages to draw you into a subject you have probably seldom thought about and you will be enriched for the journey. A memorable read.
