Good...but a few minor let-downs...

I really liked the first book and had seriously started really liking this series based off of how this book started out. The characters are interesting; the humans are survivors, struggling to find their new place in life and the alien species has definitely been thought through well. I really liked the action, the main character thoughts and feelings.
I madly loved the tension between Jet and Laks (her alien). However, the author went from teasing us with some moderately explicit detail to suddenly eliminating the romance detail altogether. Big disappointment for me. In my mind, a book needs to have a lot of depth in order to completely cut out a first time romantic interlude...but a book that has been building up to a specific relationship should not completely skip a sex scene entirely. It was literally "Jet & Laks are at dinner" and then the next page "Jet wakes up, thinking of what they did together the night before". I literally had to go back and forth through the pages in confusion thinking I missed something, but to my dismay I realized that the entire romantic exchange had been cut out even though the whole story seemed to be building up to that point.
I can only hope that the author does something to rectify this in the next book...but I am not in a rush to find out. I was most interested in the romance between Jet and Laks and the way that was handled definitely was a no go for me.

....What the heck!!!! Who does that? :)

The whole book is so good and the relationship between Jet and Laks was so good ( I was so excited I found this book with a good story and a good romance) and then...she skips the scene that we were all waiting for!!!! When they are going to be together.She just wakes up the day after and mentions this scene which happened the night before by blushing and TELLING US THAT is not relevant with what she is going through!!!
I mean c'mon!!! Who does that. The whole story is great but I felt cheated, specially if I was waiting for that. Their relationship was developing slow and nice. ;) so it's de that part important. The book has a good story of aliens and rebels. Most important she is strong and self sufficient. I'm sorry to say this but I love romance and it really made me think If the author will tell us again "screw you ,suckers!!!" I'm going to investigate :)

Losing Sleep Over This Book

The second book in the series I found better than the first in that Jet who is a slave owned by the Royals (current rulers) starts training for the Rings which is a televised event where Jet has an objective to attain a goal set up by the operators who design the simulations. Jet can still get hurt and feel pain , but to be killed for real doesn't usually happen. (The viewers don't know that. ) Richter wants Jet to succeed in passing the simulations to further his own plans The reader is left wondering who can Jet trust, who is being honest and what is the true objective?
There is also a love triangle as Jet has to show she is domesticated enough not to be a threat to the Nirreth by getting stung regularly by another Nirreth. Jet chooses Laksri for that job, but Anaze another human friend of Jet's who was captured at the same time as Jet, gets jealous as Jet and Laksri's relationship develops. The Nirreth have a barb in their tail which injects venom under the skin. This can cause an attachment to form between parties and is a prelude to sex if stung enough times. It also allows communication between the two parties mentally. The author completely avoids any descriptions of sex beyond kissing and caressing non-sexual areas of the body. At times you're left wondering what just happened when the author skips the sex scenes completely. I've read other books that are very explicit in describing sex scenes to the point it gets boring and takes away from the plot so at least this author concentrates on the plot minus any explicit sex scenes, but when she does skip any reference to a sex scene, it leaves a gap for the reader. It would have been better to allude to the sex scenes instead of completely deleting any mention of sex to this extent. Otherwise this is a book I found hard to stop reading and got me looking forward to the third book.
